Date of Passing: Jun 06, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryERICK MAURITZ OLAND With great sadness, the family announces the passing of Erick Mauritz Oland, on July 6, 2013, at Deer Lodge Centre. He was 89 years old. Erick was born in Winnipeg in 1924. He attended General Wolf and John M. King Schools, before graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in 1943. He joined the navy in 1942 and served overseas with the R.C.N.V.R. until 1945. He served in the Battle of the North Atlantic as a submarine detector on convoy duty from Newfoundland to Ireland on ships H.M.S. Loring, H.M.C.S. Longbranch, and H.M.C.S. Stormont. After the war Erick worked with his father, Cecil, in the roofing business in Winnipeg until 1959. In 1960 he began his career in the trucking industry. He was a manager and director with Westway Forwarding until 1987. Erick excelled in bicycle racing and received many honours in that sport. He was a member of the Canadian Team to the British Empire Games in Auckland, New Zealand in 1950. From 1955 until 1960 he enjoyed racing cars at Whittier Park and Brooklyn Speedway. He was awarded the title of "Cyclist of the Century" by the City of Winnipeg in 1970. Erick was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. He always said this was his greatest honour. When his competitive cycling days were over, Erick believed it was important to "give back". He spent many years as a volunteer for both the Manitoba and Canadian Cycling Associations. He was also an integral part of the organizing committees for cycling in both the 1967 and 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. With the family, relatives and friends, Erick spent over 45 years at West Hawk Lake where he enjoyed fishing, cycling, boating, and all the lake had to offer. Erick loved his family dearly. He will be sadly missed and remembered by his loving wife of over 66 years, Rita; his four children: Janice (Jim McIlroy), Lynda (Barry Brown), Judy (Rick Anderes), and Erick (Cheryll); his seven grandchildren: Wendy Preteau (Phil), Jim Fisher (Kristin Dahl), Kevin Brown (Christy), Alyson Brown (Kurt Hildebrand), Jocelyne Anderes (Rob Sawatsky), Russel Anderes, and Luc Oland, as well as his great-grandchildren: Kristen Claydon, Cody Claydon, Owen Preteau, Matthew Fisher, Lauren McIlroy, Madison Brown, Hayden Brown, and Jonah Sawatsky. He will also be missed by Irene Stobart and Shirley and Lionel Boutilier, as well as his many nieces and nephews. Erick was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Mary Oland, his sister Ramona, his brothers-in-law Robert Humphries and Tom Stobart, and his infant brother Erick. The family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre. Their kindness and compassion during this difficult time touched us all and ensured Erick's final days were dignified and peaceful. At Erick's request, cremation has taken place. A family celebration of Erick's life was held at Deer Lodge Centre. If friends so desire, a donation may be made in memory of Erick to the Children's Hospital Foundation Child Life Department, CH212-840 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1S1; the Manitoba Cycling Association Youth Development Programs, 145 Pacific, Winnipeg, MB R3B 2Z6, or a charity of their choice. Thanks Uncle Erick for showing me and so many of us what it meant and what to do to achieve our dreams. To my Auntie Rita and the Oland family thanks as well because he couldn't have helped us without you. - Posted by: Len Ramsay (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2013

Sheldon and I have fond memories of Eric, Rita and Buck, their gentle giant canine. We remember all the offers of help that Eric gave us as new cottage owners on the island. We especially remember how he came running over with a fire extinguisher when our charcoal bar b cue seemed to be spouting flames that may have ignited a fire on our deck. Simply closing the lid of our Weber bar b cue brought everything under control, but we sure appreciated Eric's coming to the rescue! Our sincere condolences to Eric's family. - Posted by: Sandy and Sheldon Glass (Former cottage neighbor on Big Island, WestHawk Lake) on: Jul 14, 2013

Erick was a very well respected gentleman. I had the honour of working with him on a 1999 Pan Am Games Committee in cycling. He brought a wealth of knowledge, experience and integrity to the group. Thanks for sharing your love of life and especially cycling with me. - Posted by: Dave Benson (Friend) on: Jul 09, 2013

Like the "red jersey" Mr. Oland was a leader in several classifications - as a builder, a coach, and a champion. We will be forever grateful for the foundation that Mr. Oland paved for cycling's future. He will be missed but not forgotten. - Posted by: Twila Pitcher (Manitoba Cycling Association) on: Jul 08, 2013

Erick was a remarkable man, both in his athletic achievements in the sport of cycling (for which he was inducted into the MB Sports Hall of Fame in 1985) and for his humble personality... a true gentleman, he will be missed. Our sympathies to Rita and her family and to the entire cycling community for their loss. - Posted by: Rick Brownlee (MB Sports Hall of Fame) on: Jul 08, 2013
