VERLA JEAN OLSON (FERRIS)
Date of Passing: Jul 07, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERLA JEAN OLSON (FERRIS) Verla Jean Olson passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the age of 73. She will be missed dearly by her loving family and many good friends. Immediate family left to mourn her are her husband of more than 50 years Cliff Olson, daughter Barbara and granddaughter Karlie, son Rob Olson (Tess Bernacki) and grandson Benjamin. Verla was predeceased by her beloved son Mitchell. Verla was born to Selwyn and Jean Ferris in Winnipeg, July 25, 1939 and was raised on the Ferris Family Farm just east of Sperling, Manitoba. A tomboy if there ever was one, Verla worked hard on the farm with her father running farm equipment and helping look after the livestock. She loved to play baseball and other sports and ride horses as a young woman. She had an active, exuberant youth. Verla married Cliff from Starbuck, Manitoba in 1960. They lost their eldest son Mitchell in 1972 when they were hit by a drunk driver on the number two highway. Verla always said Mitchell lived more in his seven years of life than some people lived in a lifetime. Verla worked at a variety of jobs throughout her life and had a long career working as an office manager at the Deer Lodge Hospital. She was known as a tireless worker and a loyal and conscientious employee who was a natural leader wherever she went. Beautiful inside and out, Verla had many friends and a full, rich life. She loved her family and was very proud of them all. She was a great wife, a wonderful Mother and Nana and good friend to so many. A feisty woman through and through, she never lost an argument as far as any of us can tell. Always so generous and thoughtful, there was almost nothing Verla would not do for her friends and family. We will all miss her twinkling eyes and that deep, hearty laugh that lit up a room. We'd like to thank Verla's friends and family for giving her such love and comfort, particularly through her health battles later in life. We'd like to especially thank Gloria Olson, Doreen Buss and Myrna Howard - thank you ladies so much for being such a good friend to Mom throughout her life and in her last days. Special thanks to the care providers at Golden West Centennial Lodge, in particular the loving and caring staff on the fourth and second floor. A celebration of Verla's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 12 at the Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple, 825 School Road with reception to follow. Interment to take place at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers gratefully declined. Should you wish, donations may be made in Verla's memory to the Salvation Army, 825 School Road, Winnipeg, MB R2Y 0S8.
