JUDY URSULA BURNS (PETERSON) June 2, 1945 - July 6, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Judy Ursula Burns, lifetime socialist, activist, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Judy is survived by her husband Raymond of 47 years, daughter Phoebe, much loved grandchildren Oliver and Molly, her brother Robin Peterson (Yumi), sisters Margaret Walker and Olivia Yarmoluk, and nieces and nephews. Judy was born in Brighton, England a place of which she had very fond memories. Judy's life was filled with vibrant social activism. In her early teens she proudly took part in the nuclear disarmament protests at Aldermaston. After immigrating to Canada in the 1960s, she was an organizational keystone in opposing the Vietnam War. Judy and Raymond met through their shared involvement in anti-war organizing. They continued a life together of political activism, attending numerous rallies and peace marches over the years. Judy worked for social justice and peace, always striving to help others. Raymond and Judy moved to Winnipeg in 1969. They lived in the North End, where they raised their daughter Phoebe. Judy worked tirelessly for her community. She fought for local projects such as a new gym at Luxton School, the establishment of an alternative flexible learning program in the Winnipeg School Division, the school ownership and operation of the cafeteria at Gordon Bell, a riverbank trail through St. John's Park to downtown, most recently the committee for the bicentennial of the coming of the Selkirk settlers to the Red River settlement and countless other community projects. Judy focussed her beliefs through the New Democratic Party. She worked as an organizer on countless NDP campaigns. She served on many executive committees and as a constituency assistant. Later, Judy became a riding assistant in the North End of Winnipeg, where she indelibly helped people with their day-to-day concerns. Fun loving, clever and witty, Judy was well known for her amazing ability to organize community meals and potlucks. She loved to prepare delicious food for her family and especially to entertain at the family cabin at Winnipeg Beach. In shared observance of Judy's life a pot luck supper is to be held at the home of Ron and Judy Wasylycia-Leis at 59 Bannerman on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 starting at 6:00 p.m.

  • Every community and neighbourhood has a limited number of people who are the stalwarts, holding things together, fighting, organizing, linking, thinking, and planning, so that those living in the community now and for years to come can enjoy what has been created. Judy was this to our neighbourhood, and while I am still new to the area, I appreciate that I enjoy living here partly due to the fruits of her tireless labour. I am saddened and feel the hole left behind, in both our hearts and at the heart of our community. Thank you Judy, thank you Ray. I know Judy's powerful community spirit lives on and grows strong in Phoebe and it is for us left behind to honour her with our efforts, for a great neighbourhood and a just society. - Posted by: Alon Weinberg (Neighbour) on: Jul 11, 2013

  • Judy was a founding member of the Residents' Association comprising the two Winnipeg neighbourhoods St. John's Park and Luxton that I had the pleasure to help organize. I was new to the community at that point and out of the goodness of her and Ray's heart they invited me to share Christmas dinner with them while Phoebe was either at or just coming back from teaching in Quebec. That was just one of the many wonderful memories that I will remember of Judy - compassionate, genuine and a fighter. - Posted by: John Wilmot (Decade and a half neighbourhood friend and co-activist) on: Jul 10, 2013
