GLENN FIELDS May 20, 1945 - July 8, 2013 Our Dad, husband, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great friend died July 8, 2013 in Calgary at age 68, surrounded by family. He stared cancer down and had it running for cover for three years. Those who knew Glenn will nod and smile; he orchestrated the turning off of life-sustaining machines like the Chair of the Board of Directors - with great dignity because that was important to him. We are sad, but we also celebrate a life immensely well lived. As Glenn said in his last few hours, "I lived 100 years of life...how great it's been." Glenn made the world a better place with his two decades of executive leadership at Industry Canada. He was educated...the kitchen table had many nights of lively hot button issues debate. He was funny...advised he should have been a stand-up comic in his last day of life, he replied "Geez I can't stand up!" He was a family man...always bringing us together in a world that tugs people apart. He was a man of deep character and integrity...a values guidepost that gives strong shape to long legacy. He travelled the globe, loved every fairway he golfed, never saw an Oilers, Jets, or World Junior hockey game he didn't like, and saw the world uniquely through his camera lens. Perhaps most of all he absolutely adored his wife Linda. They journeyed this earth together with vivid curiosity, determination, joy, and grace. In the words of Tennyson, we are "heroic hearts made weak by time and fate but not in will; to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." Glenn lived the words. We best honour Glenn's spirit by recognizing what he would say, "We all live on borrowed time. Make the most of it. Get busy living the life you dream for yourself." Glenn is survived by his wife Linda, his sons Chris and wife Debbie, Dave and wife Dimitria, five grandchildren (Nicole, Ryan, Sophia, Jack, Maitreya), sister Gale, sister/brother-in-law Eileen and Heinz, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Bill and Anne, parents-in-law Gordon and Joan, and brother-in-law Bill. A celebration of Glenn's life will be held in early September in High River. Details to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the High River District Health Care Foundation (High River Hospital Cancer Clinic), 560-9 Ave SW, High River, AB, T1N 1B3 (donation over phone: 403-652-0129). Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I knew Glenn first in high school, then U of Manitoba, where we both majored in Bridge, then working with him for Monarch Construction on the Winnipeg Floodway (Duff Roblin's ditch). I left Winnipeg not long after. We did not keep in touch, but I spoke with once after he had moved to Alberta. I did not know his parents, but remember his dad as a kind man who owned Fields Radio and TV, not far from where I lived. I always enjoyed Glenn's company, as I am sure many did. I seem to recall that he knew everyone's licence plate number. He had a penchant for cars. I still remember a gold Dodge convertible, I think. Condolences and best wishes to family and friends. - Posted by: Len Kowalik (Friend and co-worker) on: Dec 15, 2020

  • We were in the same carpool in my first year of University- 3 girls in the front seat and 4 guys in the back.(no seatbelts then). Glen was picked up last. There was not much room left for him in the back seat when we got to his apt. I remember lots of laughs in that car. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Denise Ratcliffe ( Arnal) () on: Jul 22, 2013

  • I remember when I was young, you had the coolest car. I think it was a Mazda Z-7 I think? Ever since then I have dreamt about having a fun, sporty rag-top. Say hi to your mom, dad and my mom for me please. xo Donna - Posted by: Donna Cushnie-Alexander (Van Raes) (Neigbours when we were young) on: Jul 17, 2013
