Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNE MARIE SCHMID-ESLER April 3, 1937 Winnipeg, MB July 17, 2013 Calgary, AB Anne Marie Schmid-Esler, a well known Canadian Artist, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the age of 76 years. Anne Marie was born and raised in Winnipeg. She attended the University of Manitoba where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. After travel and further studies in Europe, she returned to Winnipeg and soon decided to focus her education in the area of fine art (specifically ceramic sculpture). In 1964, she met and married John K. Esler, and based on his teaching opportunity, they promptly moved to Calgary. Continuing on with her education, Anne Marie graduated with a diploma in ceramics from Alberta College of Art in 1968. Around this time, along with her husband and two young boys, she moved into a uniquely built home on an acreage, just west of Calgary. Family life began and she embraced the many roles she had. Most of all, Anne Marie loved working in her studio, finding energy and inspiration from the spectacular surrounding landscape. Over the years her art career grew and flourished (spanning over 25 years). Anne Marie's artwork is represented in gallery, university, museum and private collections across Canada and abroad. She was an instructor, advisor, and lecturer, as well as a recipient of several grants for projects and awards for excellence. The family would like to sincerely thank the entire care team at the Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore for their dedication and compassion, as well as, the incredible companionship care workers provided by We Care Home Health Services. She will be lovingly remembered by her siblings Hubert and Hanna; sons J.D. (Jacqui) and Sean (Tara); grandchildren Teige and Pippa, as well as her numerous extended family members and friends. Anne Marie was predeceased by her parents John and Elizabeth; and by her husband (artist/printmaker) John K. Esler. I was looking for some slides of Anne Marie's work on the web this morning and came across the notice of her passing. I had the very good fortune to be a student at the U of C back in the early 1970's when she was teaching there. I only had her for one semester/class, and yet she left a lifelong impression on me, as an artist who simply woke up a part of my creative soul. I am doing a basic ceramic workshop for some high school students this morning, and my thoughts will be very much with Anne Marie during the workshop, and in the months to come as I reflect on how she motivated me to pursue raku for the 40 years since I graduated from school.... - Posted by: Michael Machielse (Student) on: May 10, 2016

Anne Marie was my teacher one summer in the 1980s at Emily Carr (now University) of Art & Design in Vancouver. I remember her with love and affection for her equanimous nature and creative teaching, I shall never forget her. - Posted by: Tom Foreman (Student) on: Feb 08, 2014

Anne Marie's humour and irreverence are just a couple of things I remember about her personally.(I can still remember the sound of her laughter especially in light of some idiocy taking place in the art world.)It seems to me her last exhibited art was made about 20 years ago. Before that, Anne Marie had made a really solid contribution to contemporary art with her ceramic and mixed media work. Now looking back, I think her art foretold of a period when craft-based materials (like clay) would become more acceptable as they now seem to be today. In fact, Anne Marie, I think, would be quite at home with some of today's younger artists. She was a boundary-breaker with a great imagination. Rest well, Anne Marie.
