Born: Feb 12, 1925
Date of Passing: Jul 23, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLEONARD ISRAEL HALPRIN February 12, 1925 - July 23, 2013 Len passed away peacefully at the Louis Brier Home in Vancouver with family at his side. He is survived by four of his children: Rokie Bernstein (Bob), Josh (Barb), David, and Megan, his five grandchildren: Miel (Claus), Sarah (Greg), Mike, Alexandra, and Aaron, two great-grandchildren: (Sage and Jade) and his brother Herb (Susan), sister-in-law Sandra, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Len was predeceased by his son Irving (Chuckie), Miriam (Finkelstein) his beloved wife of more than 50 years, and his brother Tom. Len had a long and full life. Although he lived in Vancouver for the last 33 years of his life, first and foremost he was a North End guy - one of the Matheson Avenue boys, a member of the St. John's Tech group. He was a lifelong volunteer, always active in the community. Along with Miriam and six or seven other couples, they raised the money to build the River Heights Community Centre and then volunteered there for many years. Len was still driving the "old folks" to lunch at the JCC in Vancouver when he was 80. Len was the nicest person you would ever want to meet - a true mensch. He will be remembered for his great smile, quiet sense of humour and love of family. Len was a realist - his favourite saying "it is what it is". Poppy (as he was known to many) was sweet, kind, and gentle. He was the guy people called when they were troubled or in trouble. Special thanks go to Mothe and Hajie for their loving care of Dad. Funeral services will be held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in Winnipeg (Wellington) on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery after which the meal of consolation will be served back at the synagogue. Shiva will be at 830 Oak Street from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday July 28, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday July 29. Donations may be made to the Leonard Halprin Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.
