JACEK IGNACY ROMANOWSKI Jack (Jacek) Romanowski died unexpectedly in Winnipeg in early July, having just turned 80. Jack was born in Poland in 1933 and moved to Montreal as a young man. He studied geography at McGill University and graduated with a BA in 1959. In his early career he lectured at several universities, most notably at Kansas and Washington. In 1977 he became a professor in the Geography Department at the University of Manitoba. He retired in 1999. Jack's early scholarship, including his doctorate at the University of Washington (1970), centred on agriculture in eastern Europe. Subsequently his research interests encompassed the spectrum of land resources. Although much of his work entailed land use issues on marginal lands in Canada, he undertook collaborative research in Tanzania and China. At the University of Manitoba his teaching specialty was natural resources. He was active in graduate research supervision in Natural Resource Management as well as in Geography. He will be missed by friends, colleagues and former students.
