Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBESS GREENBERG (nee ZIPURSKY) 1919 - 2013 Bess passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013 at the age of 94, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Martin; mother of Andrea (Terry) Braunstein, and Joel Greenberg; grandmother to Lisa, Dave, Danny, Amy, Joelle, Esther and Amy; great-grandmother to Noah, Breanne, Ella, Sophie, Raya, Joshua and Finley, and sister to Bernice (Alan) Walder. Bess grew up in Winnipeg and was educated at St. John's High School. She was an accomplished pianist and won a scholarship to attend a music conservatory in Chicago. Family was very important to her and she particularly enjoyed family summer holidays at Clear Lake and winter holidays with Martin in Hawaii. In later years she learned how to transcribe text into braille, first as a volunteer and later as an employee of the Winnipeg School Division. She specialized in supporting children with special needs, a part of her life which was particularly fulfilling. Her numerous hobbies included bowling with Martin, bridge with friends, reading and baking her famous GIGI' cookies. Her strength, courage and positive attitude in her final days was an inspiration to all. The family would like to thank the Palliative nurses that cared for her at home. A special thank you to the kind and compassionate staff at the Grace Hospice who treated her with respect and dignity in her final days. Funeral services were held on July 25, 2013 at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, officiated by Rabbi Alan Green. Pallbearers were Terry Braunstein, Danny Braunstein, Amy Braunstein, Lorne Billinkoff, Mitchell Billinkoff and Lorne Pollock. Donations in Bess' name may be made to the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre, CancerCare or the charity of your choice.
