DORIS (DODIE) BARBARA ATKINSON
Born: May 25, 1922
Date of Passing: Aug 02, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDORIS (DODIE) BARBARA ATKINSON May 25, 1922 - August 2, 2013 Dodie lived her first 18 years on a farm near tiny, unknown Yarbo, Saskatchewan amongst nine siblings. She enjoyed her last 73 years in Winnipeg where she succumbed to infection after emergency surgery. The widow of Thomas Atkinson and mother to Dwight Atkinson of Vancouver (wife Jennifer Lamb), Dodie is survived by sisters Ethel and Blanche. She was a lifelong teacher and practitioner of the Hawaiian guitar, ultimately performing in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's program "Hawaiian Holiday." In early years she worked with an old-time band and in later years, she volunteered with dance groups, entertaining in seniors' homes. A grass skirt in her music studio symbolized the Polynesian serenity her music evoked. Active for many years in the Catholic Women's League, she worked in committee to produce the fall Smorgasbord and the Spring Tea, eventually becoming President of Holy Cross Parish Council. Surviving life-threatening illness in 1966, she recovered with fitness, practising yoga, aquasize and ballroom dancing until diminished by arthritis in her mid-eighties. She was vibrant, gregarious and good-natured, baking lemon meringue pies for her friends, knitting cherished sweaters for her family, accessorizing bright patterned outfits, solving word puzzles and growing marigolds from seed. Dodie leaves numerous close friends and relatives who assisted her greatly as she declined. We thank you. Funeral Mass with reception to follow on Thursday, August 8, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 252 Dubuc Street, Winnipeg.

Doris was much more than a student, she was a cherished friend to my whole family. I remember when my oldest daughter, Angela, was born Doris came to visit with pie in one hand and gift in the other. To this day I still have that gift, Angela's first snowsuit. It was always so enjoyable when Doris and Phonse would be in the studio together. Their laughter would fill the ballroom with delight. Thanks for all the wonderful memories and God Bless you Doris. - Posted by: Joanne Hood (Long time Ballroom Dance Teacher) on: Aug 22, 2013

My deepest condolences on behalf of the Homenick to Dwight and Jennifer and all of Doris's immediate family. "Auntie Doris", as I knew her, in my younger years was quite the lady and like a 2nd mother. Dwight and I are the same age and Doris was one of my Mother's (Annette Homenick) best friends. I would like to share a quote with Doris's family and hope they will find comfort in it. Doris has not died, but merely gone away, to a better place, free of pain and suffering. You will be re-united with her some day. Rest In Peace, Doris. You are now with your husband, Tom and my parents, Harry & Annette Homenick, looking down at Dwight and I. You will be missed but, at least, you are not suffering anymore. - Posted by: Patricia Homenick (Longtime Neighbour) on: Aug 06, 2013
