VERA MARIE MUNICK It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear wife and mother, Vera Munick, who died peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre on Saturday, August 10, 2013. She leaves to join her parents Mary and Wasyl Dutka, her brother Donald Dutka, and sister Alexandra Dutka. She will be lovingly remembered by her beloved husband Walter and her daughter and kindred spirit Maria; sisters Anne Ditz, Phyllis Mychalyshen, Betty Dutka, Helen Fustey, and Marie Koroscil; brother Mike Dutka; many nieces and nephews; as well as many dear friends. Vera was born in the town of Oakburn, Manitoba, on August 17, 1932. She spent her early years there on the farm, going to school in Braddock and Oakburn. In her teenage years, she attended Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where her deep faith in the Catholic religion first took root. From there, she decided to dedicate her life to helping others, so she attended nursing school at the Misericordia General Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. During this time, she met her lifemate Walter, and they were married in Winnipeg in 1954. After graduation, she worked as an R.N. and Head Nurse at the Misericordia Hospital. Her daughter Maria was born during these years, at the same hospital in 1962. In 1966, the young family needed a change and moved to a new home in St. James where she lived out her life. There, Vera began working as an R.N. at the Grace General Hospital, where she eventually retired. Vera's care and concern for others was rooted in her deep spirituality. She attended mass regularly at the Holy Family Parish, attending the prayer group and becoming a member of the choir. She would do anything to help out a family member or a friend, or even a stranger in need. She was an excellent gardener, producing the finest flowers, fruits and vegetables in the neighbourhood. Her fabulous cooking and canning abilities will be especially missed by her family and friends - there was no equal. Special thanks go out to the health care providers at the Misericordia Health Centre (Cornish 6) and the Riverview Health Centre (CD-1), where Vera lived her last year. Their support and compassion will not be forgotten. The funeral service in her memory will be held at the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue, on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Darren Kawiuk officiating. A gathering of family and friends will take place after the service in the Holy Family Church basement. Following lunch, interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church's Renovation and Repair Fund. "You are a precious blessing Mother, and you are appreciated, needed and loved - much more than you know. Our lives have been much richer and full of love because of you. God bless you always." Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I had the good fortune to work with Vera at the Grace General Hospital (Obstetrics and Gyne) for several years. Vera was a committed and caring nurse who always had her patient's best interest in mind. Vera was also a generous team member and supported her colleagues in individual and collective ways. She often brought some of her beautiful flowers, and delicious baking to the unit and also hosted many fun staff parties at their home. With thanks for your friendship and dedication to the nursing profession, Barbara - Posted by: Barbara Bilodeau-Shumeley (Nursing colleague and friend) on: Aug 18, 2013
