PAUL DOUGLAS STUART COATES It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and friend Paul Douglas Stuart Coates. Paul was born on December 23, 1924 and passed August 10, 2013 after many days surrounded by his loving family. Paul proudly served his country as the ASDIC operator aboard the flower class corvette HMCS LaChute. He and his crew bravely defended vital convoys from Canada to Great Britain in the Battle of the Atlantic. He was a lifelong member of the Charleswood Legion. Paul worked many years at CN Rail before retiring to spend more time at home with his wife and family. In his retirement years he could always be found in his garden or reading in his recliner. Grampa's favourite joy was spending time with his grandchildren and he took great pride in each of them. Grandpa was known for his gallery of family photos, which surrounded him in each room of his home. To his grandchildren he was an endless source of love, caring, encouragement and support. Paul lived a life of few regrets and taught us all to cherish each and every day. Paul was predeceased by his wife Johanna (1992) and is survived by his five children; Doug Coates (Cathy), Janice Dack, Dale Coates, Cheryl Timmerman (Dave), Steve Coates (Dawn) He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Barrett (Janelle), Jordan (Ashley), Evan, Sarah (Jess), Erin, Alana (Greg), Melani (Jason), Madison and great- grandchildren Taylor, JD, and Brody. The family would like to thank the staff at the Health Sciences Centre specifically the nurses and caregivers in GA3. A celebration of Paul's life will be held at his home on Friday, August 16 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Friends of the Harte Trail, 5006 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, R3R 0G7 (www.winnipegtrails.ca).

  • I remember Uncle Paul way back when I was a child. He was always so thoughtful, quiet and kind. I found some pictures of him in Grandma's pictures and he was so good looking in his sailor uniform. We are so sorry for your loss but I am sure he was very proud of the legacy he and Auntie Joan left behind in his family. - Posted by: Chris Milloy (Niece) on: Aug 15, 2013

  • As people who had a more distant and occasional relationship with Paul we were always struck with some amazing qualities of his character. Our belief that all people carry the image of God was confirmed in Paul's life as we observed a kindness and gentleness in his mannerism. While visiting him in hospital there was a quietness in the face of significant health limitations that many would not exhibit. Peace to his memory and strength to his family. - Posted by: Jeff and Darlene Anderson (Friends) on: Aug 15, 2013

  • Always remember the care Janice, Sarah and and Erin took in Grandma's garden. So many memories were shared and stories told around and within the garden. It was a place where family could gather and friends were at peace. The garden was a place to reflect, remember and plan. Sarah, Erin and Janice started the garden in memory of their Grandma but it became their connection to their Grandpa and their plan for the future. Although I never saw it, I heard about this family jewel, the garden, a place where family could unite and celebrate life. Grandpa reinforced these values across his family. Grandpa has joined Grandma now but what matters the most is the love of life our - Posted by: Carol Paul (Hawkins) (Friend of Janice Dack) on: Aug 15, 2013

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts! Your dad must have been proud of his kids! - Posted by: Mark Petursson (Friend (School mate of Doug and Janice)) on: Aug 15, 2013

  • Our family met Paul many years ago while visiting my sister and her husband (Steven, Paul's son). From that point on Paul treated us like family, he always sent Christmas Cards, had treats for our children during visits and was quickly adopted as Grandpa Paul. He was a wonderful man with a lovely spirit. Sending our love to all of his Family in Winnipeg, especially Steven, Dawn and Madison. - Posted by: Tricia and Family (The Dominiks) (Family, my sister is his daughter in law) on: Aug 15, 2013
