JOHN A. MOORHOUSE
Date of Passing: Aug 16, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. JOHN A. MOORHOUSE Dr. John A. Moorhouse, a man of integrity, intelligence and grace, died peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on Friday, August 16, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Dagmar; daughter, Aynsley; stepson, Jason Fridrik; brother, Michael (Margaret); sister-in-law, Gabriela Benadik (Kazo); and his nephews, niece, and their families. John received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1950. Throughout his career he had an active clinical practice while maintaining a close association with the university as a Professor of Physiology involved in both teaching and research. After completing his residency, he continued his studies during two years at the University of Illinois followed by two years at Ann Arbor where he served as a research fellow in Endocrinology and Metabolism, working with some of the top specialists in the field. Upon his return to Winnipeg, he established and served as the head of the Section of Endocrinology in the Department of Medicine. In conjunction, he developed the Endocrine and Metabolism Laboratory serving as its Director for the next 15 years. John was a pioneer in the field in his recognition that Diabetes was on the rise in Manitoba, and that the complications associated with the disease were causing great strain on individuals as well as the health care system. As a result, John was integral in the establishment of the Diabetes Education Centre, and became its Director in 1966. In 1991, John retired from the university, but maintained his private practice until his full retirement in 2005. He conducted himself with his patients as he did with all who knew him, with kindness, compassion and selflessness. A loving husband, father and friend, he was known for his gentle disposition and mischievous sense of humour. He loved music, art and theatre, and always found time to travel and explore the world. We would like to extend deep gratitude to River Heights Home Care for their support over the last few years, and to the staff and volunteers at Victoria Hospital, Poseidon Care Centre, and Riverview Health Centre for their care over the last 10 months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Foundation of Manitoba, RPO 971 Corydon Ave., P.O. Box 44, Winnipeg, MB R3M 0Y2. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 22 at St. John's College Chapel, 92 Dysart Rd.

I only learned today of Dr. Moorhouse's passing and it has brought back a flood of fond memories. John was initially my doctor when I was diagnosed with diabetes at 19 and then took me on as a graduate student when I pursued my master's of science degree. The description of John as a deeply caring doctor, but having a mischievous sense of humour is very apt and true. My condolences to Dagmar, Aynsley and the rest of the family. He was one of the good ones. - Posted by: Carol Hanney (Patient, grad student, friend) on: May 12, 2015

Learning recently of the death of John Moorehouse brought back memories of his friendly and supportive presence when I was a medical student at U. of M. As a colleague in later years he was extremely supportive of my efforts to establish myself as an academic endocrinologist. He offered advice and understanding not often seen and became as I look back now a role model. I trust that some memorial to this perceptive and highly intelligent physician and gentleman will remain in the Manitoba Medical School. - Posted by: Wilson Rodger, MD (Colleague in the world of diabetes) on: Jan 25, 2014

John was a uniquely memorable doctor. His was a practice of the Art - and not just the Science - of Medicine wrapped in the gift of an unassuming and collaborative style. He was a rarity - a kind and giving nature, the open-mindedness and curiosity that comes with great intelligence and true interest in his fellow human beings. I have, and will continue to miss him. My sincerest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Vickie Mowchun () on: Sep 11, 2013

Dr. Moorhouse always treated his patients as stated - with kindness, compassion and selflessness. He gave the time to ask about family or sharing stories about his own life or travels or humorous anecdotes - making a patient feel like we were two equal people having a chat on a park bench. Then he would quietly state a diagnosis or medication change as if it was an afterthought to what he would rather continue doing - Sharing stories of life - so all would know that there was goodness and humor in each and every day. - Posted by: L. Dr. Moorhouse was the first endocrinologist I had and one of the few doctors I have seen in my life time who saw the person first, not the illness. God bless you, doctor. May your family find peace in their memories of you. - Posted by: Kristin (former patient) on: Aug 20, 2013

I had a marked interest in diabetes as an obstetrician and gynecologist. Dr. Moorhouse was often a great help and was a very devoted physican. I appreciated his contributions to the work in which I was involved. He was always most helpful. - Posted by: Philip Barnes M.D.F.R.C.SC (C) (co worker and admirer) on: Aug 20, 2013

Dr. Moorhouse looked after my father, Paul Ganton, and me for many years. He was the only doctor that took time with my Dad to discuss life in general, and not just his medical condition. I was so sad when he was no longer able to practice, but also knew that it was time for him to retire. He was a true gentleman, and always had time to make you feel that together, we could control diabetes. He will be missed, and I thank his family for letting us spend so many years in his care. - Posted by: Colleen Byron (Past Patient) on: Aug 18, 2013

Our 4 year old son, Dale was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1971. Before we met Dr. Moorhouse, our son experienced many problems. Our life changed dramatically when Dale, age 8, became Dr. Moorhouse's patient. We will forever be indebted to a wonderful doctor and because of his care our son leads a great life following the guidelines of many years ago and now the insulin pump. Our heartfelt sympathies to his family. We will always remember Dr. Moorhouse with deepest gratitude and respect. - Posted by: Dale & Joan Stewart (Our son, Dale was a patient) on: Aug 17, 2013
