NANCY DAFOE (nee COSGRAVE) January 30, 1937 - July 20, 2013 Suddenly, at home, at age 76. Nancy was born in County Cork, Ireland, where she was educated at the Convent of Mercy in Kinsale. In 1959, while working as a nurse in London, she met her future husband, Christopher, and, early in the leap year that followed, proposed to him. They were married in his hometown of Winnipeg in 1960 and spent the next 53 years side by side. Christopher's work took them to Vancouver in the late 1960s, but they returned to Winnipeg in 1982 to be close to aging family, and to the family cottage at Ponemah, on Lake Winnipeg. They retired to Vancouver in 1998 to be closer to their children, Christopher (Carol), Sarah, and Alexander (Diana), and their beloved grandchildren, Madeleine and Kaitlynn. Earlier this summer Nancy enjoyed one last trip to Ponemah with all her children in attendance. Nancy had a warm smile, a sharp wit, an infectious laugh, a fiery spirit and a loving, generous soul. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. On the morning she died, she and Christopher enjoyed a lovely walk together around the West End of Vancouver. And for the last of so many times, he bought her flowers. A celebration of Nancy's life will take place in Winnipeg next summer.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I met Nancy in London in the late 1950s -- she was one of a group of young people who shared in celebrating the city that seemed to be at the centre of the universe. She and Chris fell in love, and returned to his home in Winnipeg. It was a wonderful journey for them both, and they were a beautiful and much loved couple. It was only in the fall of 2017 that I heard of Nancy's passing, and I know how much this potent, spirited, uncompromisingly down to earth woman will be missed by my good friend Chris and their children. Hats off to Nancy -- a great Irish spirit and passionate partner to my great friend Chris. - Posted by: Peter Carver (Friend) on: Apr 01, 2018
