THOMAS ARTHUR BURWOOD Born November 18, 1968 Passed Away August 19, 2013 Tom passed away in his sleep. He is survived by his mother and father, Hilda and Ed, his siblings Dan, Wendy, Cathy, Jeff, and Melvin, his brother-in-law Barry, and his niece Katrina. He will be lovingly remembered by his close and dear friends, Dave, Theresa, Mike, Urbano, Ron, and Linda. Tom was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the young age of ten, he became a Christian, and was baptized in Headingly, at the Sonnichsens' swimming pool. When his grandma, Sara Penner, became ill with cancer, he spent endless hours going to visit her at her home and the hospital. He loved her dearly. Tom spent most of his life as a professional truck driver. He loved the open road. Tom was well known for his passion for computers and movies. He had many struggles in his life, and the last six years of his life he spent dealing with severe back pain. During this time, he became much closer with his family. Through all his pain, he never gave up on his big plans for the future. He also never lost his compassion for what other people were suffering through. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends, and will never be forgotten. The song that best suits Tom is Whispering Hope. Soft as the voice of an angel, Breathing a lesson unheard, Hope with a gentle persuasion Whispers her comforting word: Wait till the darkness is over, Wait till the tempest is done, Hope for the sunshine tomorrow, After the shower is gone. Whispering hope, oh, how welcome thy voice, Making my heart in its sorrow rejoice. If, in the dusk of the twilight, Dim be the region afar, Will not the deepening darkness Brighten the glimmering star? Then when the night is upon us, Why should the heart sink away? When the dark midnight is over, Watch for the breaking of day. Hope, as an anchor so steadfast, Rends the dark veil for the soul, Whither the Master has entered, Robbing the grave of its goal; Come then, oh, come, glad fruition, Come to my sad weary heart; Come, O Thou blest hope of glory, Never, oh, never depart. Due to his great compassion for those suffering with cancer, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I met Tom almost 30 years ago in Charleswood. He lived one street over from me. I have very fond memories of Tom and was very sad to hear of his passing. Such a sweet soul. Tom always had a big smile on his face when he saw you. Such a beautiful smile. Always happy to see you. He used to drive me to school in the old reliable k-car. I can still picture that old car. We also worked together for a while at the Olive Garden. I was a server and he was a line cook. I remember being at the window waiting for food. There would be nothing in the window and in a matter of seconds he would put about 20 orders in the window and yell "order up". I was amazed! Such a hard worker. I ran into Tom a few years ago and it was like nothing had changed. A big smile and a big hug was coming my way. That made my day. It was so nice to see him. It's funny... I was just thinking about him the other day wondering how he was doing and to hear this sad news breaks my heart. My heart, prayer, and love goes out to Tom's family and friends. Even though we will miss him God got one of his angels home. Rest in peace my dear friend. - Posted by: Tammy Weppler Johnson (Friend) on: Aug 26, 2013

  • I first met Tom at Westwood Clinic. We became fast friends. He had the biggest heart, Loved his family and his friends, he talked about them all the time. I will remember him for the Love, Support and Friendship that he gave to me. Our funny shopping trips, movies, but most of all his sense of humor. The laughs that we had were the best. He had a spirit like no other. My heart is heavy with sadness. I will miss you Tom my dear friend. Till we meet again. - Posted by: Shelly Knowles (Simkins) (Friend) on: Aug 24, 2013

  • As my cousin, Tommy was one of my favorites. I truly believe we were kindred spirits. He was thoughtful, caring and a bit of a scoundrel! I will always be grateful for that telephone call I received from him when I was going through a rough patch in my life. That he took the time to reach out to me meant the world to me. He will be dearly missed and I send my deepest condolences to Auntie Hilda, Uncle Eddie and family and also to Tommy's friends. - Posted by: Michelle Dimitroff Ross (Cousin) on: Aug 23, 2013

  • Tom & I first met over 40 years ago. We quickly became the best of friends,, even blood brothers! In fact, the better part of my youth was spent in the company of Tommy. A few things I'll never forget about him; Compassion,, Tom would often stand up for the underdog, the smaller kid, including me! It was clear that Tom cared for people, both strangers an friends alike. Courage,, Tom had a way of staring down trouble and not backing down from strife. Tom was not afraid to stand up for himself and those he cared for, or to show kindness. Spirit,, Tom had a spirit that could not be kept down! The laughs that we shared were always over the top! Tom could tease his siblings like no other,, he could have been an actor if he chose to. His passion for life, his quick wit and intelligence are something to be admired. The world is lesser without you Tom. Rest in Peace - Posted by: Jeff Hillock (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2013

  • I will always remember Tommy as the big brother that would always stand up for me, chase away the boys that made me cry and lending me his black Trans Am whenever I needed it!! He always made an effort to visit me whenever I returned to Winnipeg and we would always pick up where we left off! My last message from Tom was on twitter where he "tweeted" @tomcat01: @BLF710 hello my little sister you are as beautiful as always ..! Well Tom I am here in Winnipeg today and spent a good part of the day at your place, in spirit you are there but I am overwhelmed with sadness that my great big bear hug was missed!! Gone too soon big brother, it goes without saying you will be genuinely missed!! Sleep in heavenly peace Tommy!! - Posted by: Brenda Duncan Fenton ("Little sister") on: Aug 23, 2013

  • Your endless humour even when you were suffering in pain, always a smile or a joke to get you through it. Movie talks, letting us know what was good and not so good, lol. You made everyone's day as soon as you walked through the door. We now remember the fun and happiness you brought with you on saddened hearts. We are thankful that you have no more pain, even though the price was your life. You are forever in our hearts, love and miss you Tom, the Girls at Westwood Clinic. - Posted by: Westwood Clinic (Friends) on: Aug 23, 2013
