DONALD HARVEY REID Don passed peacefully on August 7, in Los Altos, California. He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years - Maureen, two devoted sons - William and Cameron, two caring daughters-in-law Helen and Lesley, and three beautiful granddaughters Carly, Ciara and Shannon. A Winnipegger from birth, Don was an avid athlete but his favourite sports were baseball and basketball. In 1949, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, but chose instead to stay in Winnipeg and finish his degree. Don went to the University of Manitoba and played basketball for the Manitoba Bison's and was a member of the team that went to the Canadian Championship. After, he pitched for the Carman Cardinals of the Man-Dak league and was inducted into the Manitoba baseball hall of fame in 2005 for his pitching prowess. Shortly thereafter he married his beautiful bride, Maureen, and began his career as an actuary. He became a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1965 and rose to the level of Vice President with Towers Watson (formerly Towers, Perin, Forster and Crosby) where he served until his retirement in 1990. Don was a devoted father and husband and took every opportunity to improve the lives of his family. He was a little league baseball coach, hockey coach, served as president of our summer swimming club and managed the Basketball tournament at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Don's final days were spent close to his family, and he and Maureen developed many lasting friendships having lived in Winnipeg, Montreal, Vancouver, San Francisco, Dallas, and Brentwood, California. Integrity, honesty and hard work were hallmarks of his character, and he inspired those around him to "leave things better than you found them". In lieu of flowers, his family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice in Don's name.

  • Thank you for letting us know Bill. Sincerest Condolences! We remember your dear father from many years ago. Ron & I both came from Winnipeg so we had a special love for him, the most gracious, dearest of men. I remember the couple of visits at our home in MTL, early in the morning with you holding your father's arm on your way to some sports practice. We remember many good times together. We send our love & prayers to your Mom and wish her good memories & Peace. With Love! - Posted by: Ron & Claudette Giesinger (friends) on: Sep 01, 2013
