BARRY (STEWART) THOMAS O'BRIEN It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected, yet peaceful passing of our father. Barry "Stewart" O'Brien passed away on August 20, 2013, at 72 years old in his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His parents Thomas and Frances O'Brien predeceased Stewart. His memory will be cherished by devoted wife Brenda; sons Shawn, Michael and Kelly; daughter-in-laws Ashley and Mandy; grandchildren Jordan, Joey, Thomas, Greyson, Spencer and Evan; and his siblings Don (Carol) O'Brien, Pat (Evelyn) O'Brien, Lynda (Bob) Felker, Janie (Paul) Sokol; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Stewart was born July 9, 1941, in London, Ontario. After a few decades, he made his way to Winnipeg where he and Maryanne O'Brien were blessed with their three sons. Stewart worked for the City for years until he decided to start his career of auto sales. He was a successful car dealer for many years until he retired. Stewart took very much pride in his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed going out to the lake, being surrounded by family and friends, telling embellished stories and joking around. Stewart's character was one of a kind; he loved to push the envelope. He was known for his loud bark but those who were fortunate to know him knew underneath was a heart of gold. His memory will be forever in our hearts. A service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere, with a celebration of his life to follow. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

  • To the Family of the late Barry O'Brien; Brenda, Shawn (Ashley), Michael (Mandy), and Kelly O'Brien; It is with deepest sympathy and much sadness; the passing of your husband, father, and grandfather; From aunt Margaret and your cousins; Robert (Valerie) and Family, Tom,(Maureen) and Family, Mary (Peter) and Family, and Joseph. In 1953; out on our farm in Whelan Corners, Barry came out to visit for the summer. I was 13 he was 12, as budding teenagers we had a lot of fun, and pulled many pranks! One of our famous pastimes, was swimming in the creek looking for tad poles. Barry taught us how to drive the tractor, especially during the harvest time, bringing in the hay. On more mischievous times we snuck out behind my father's barn to smoke, I got so sick; and he just laughed his head off. Barry said I told you Margaret to exhale not inhale. (haha To this day I have never smoked a cigarette since). Back in the early 70's, he came out to Vancouver and stayed with myself and my young family. At that time he was trying to cope with many of life's challenges. To see a young good looking guy in his late twenties, arrive on the scene driving a yellow Camaro sports car; which was his pride and joy, was a sight to behold.! I lost track of him for awhile when I found out he moved to Winnipeg and got into the car business. Well as I am sure right now, he is showing saint Peter the new model for 2014. Rest in peace my dear nephew until we meet again, may God keep you in the palm of his hand. Love and prayers aunt Margaret. xxoo - Posted by: Margaret Cottons (Aunt) on: Aug 26, 2013

  • I have 3 decades of memories of Stewart (we called him "Stu" at our house) He was my Dad, Jim's best friend for years. I can recall while still living at home when Stu would call my house 5, sometimes 10 times a week to converse with my Dad about his latest car victory or feat - usually wrapped up in an entertaining and witty story that I would hear as well. He always made me laugh by catching me off guard and made my Dad laugh which I have always appreciated. He had a huge heart - I could tell his family meant so much to him. My prayer for all those that will miss Stu is that they remember how to stop and laugh (even during tough times) as he did and that each would experience God's comfort now and during those hard "missing" moments in the future. - Posted by: Tannis Hogue (Daughter of one of Stewart's best friends (and friend!)) on: Aug 26, 2013
