MARGARET PASCOE SMITH It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Pascoe Smith on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at West Park Manor in Winnipeg. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Roger Smith, her mother and father Jessie and Ernest Pascoe as well as her sister Jay Ridd. She is survived by her children Bruce (Linda), Murray (Linda), Pat (Denis) and Terry (Garry), grandchildren Ben (Terri), Nicki (Jorge), Wes, Dana (Tim), Chris, Cory (Heather) and Jaclyn as well as great-grandchildren Matthew and Brooklyn. Margaret was born in Winnipeg on September 20, 1917 and lived most of her life in Manitoba. She attended United College, an affiliate of the University of Manitoba and graduated with a degree in Education. Following several years of teaching in Winnipeg, she worked building artillery guns for the armed forces in Montreal during the war and married Roger Smith upon his return from overseas military service in 1946. She was a stay-at-home mother in Ontario for the next 10 years, although she did substitute teach on occasion. They moved with their growing family to Austria where they lived for an exciting two years starting off with the birth of their fourth child, Terry. Soon after their return to Canada, they moved to Pinawa, Manitoba and were one of the original "Pinawa Pioneers". During this time she was an active member of the Pinawa Christian Fellowship and the Pinawa Ladies Bridge Club. She volunteered at the Gilbert School Library in Pinawa, the Museum of Man and Nature in Winnipeg as well as teaching English to new Canadians. For the next several decades they divided their time between Pinawa and their cottage at Victoria Beach. Victoria Beach was their little piece of heaven and coincidentally the place where they met and fell in love 75 plus years ago. In 2000 they sold their house in Pinawa and commuted between their new condominium in Winnipeg and their beloved Victoria Beach cottage. Following the sudden death of her husband in 2007, and due to health considerations, Margaret spent the last six years of her life at the West Park Manor where she enjoyed many activities. Margaret was a gentle and loving mother to whom family meant everything. She had a keen intellect and used it wisely dispensing sage advice at opportune times. Her extensive research on the many travels that she and Roger embarked on provided insight and understanding of the cultures visited. Special thanks go out to Helen Simpson who provided loving care for Margaret for the past six years. A memorial service to celebrate Margaret's life will be held on Tuesday, September 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lutheran Church in Pinawa (corner of Burrows and Massey). In lieu of flowers, donations will be greatly accepted by the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
