ED KLEIMAN February 27, 1932 - August 28, 2013 Author, University Professor, Husband, Father Ed Kleiman was born in Winnipeg's fabled Jewish enclave, the North End, where much of his fiction is set. He enjoyed an eclectic childhood there where his parents, William and Luba Kleiman, were starting a new life after leaving Russia in difficult circumstances. Many of the experiences and people he knew in childhood became backgrounds and characters in his subsequent fictional work. Ed attended the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto where he became passionate about English literature. Ed graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1953. As students Ed and his future wife Carol met at the University of Manitoba and married in England where Ed was working as a teacher. He received his MA from the University of Toronto in 1959, while studying under Northrop Frye. He returned to Winnipeg and in 1961 started as a lecturer at the English Department at The University of Manitoba, where he subsequently became an Associate Professor. He taught English at the University of Manitoba from 1961 to 1996, where he inspired and motivated students with his gentle sensitivity and intelligence to learn and grow with his insight and understanding. He was much loved, respected and appreciated by family, friends, colleagues and students. He also enjoyed camping, sailing, and traveling with his family. His greatest relationship was with his wife Carol, and they were still the love of each other's life. He is the author of about three-dozen short stories -- including three collections: The Immortals (1980), A New-Found Ecstasy (1988), and The World Beaters (1998) -- and over a dozen works of literary criticism. Last Year Prairie Fire published what Ed expressed to family would be his last short story, Why Did You Leave Me? (2012). He has been described as "one of Canada's best short story writers" (Peter Stenberg, Canadian Literature, 1990) http://umanitoba.academia.edu/EdKleiman Survived by his wife Carol and children Ben, Joan, Kathy, Dan, and grandchildren Laura, Michelle, Kayle, Eamon, Jacob, Chantal, Jenai, Michael, and James Aaron ("AJ"). • I was just telling someone about how my love of American poetry came from Ed's class at U of M in the - what - 80's? 90's? I learned Ferlinghetti, Wallace Stevens, Jeffers, in Ed's class. I took his class because I heard he was a great teacher, and he was, and his course changed my life. Our teachers live on in us. - Posted by: Yvette Nolan (former student ) on: Sep 05, 2020

  • Finally got around to posting a tribute to my Uncle Ed during this 2020 year of the virus - A respected scholar and author from the University of Winnipeg - He confided in me various life events about my father / his brother Martin - the half has never been told. His books and short stories were a thinly veiled autobiography of his childhood and family life. Many of the events so lovingly detailed were actual events which my father never shared. Uncle Ed wrote out of both love and pain - It is a story worth telling - we are all products of the diaspora from our beloved Israeli homeland. Baruch HaShem - This tribute also sends greetings to my first cousins Ben and Kathy who I have not seen in decades but remember you fondly.... Greeting to both Dan and Joan as well - Posted by: Rev. Dr. Stephen H. Kleiman (Nephew) on: Apr 16, 2020

  • Dad always had insights into other peoples lives that he would share with me and encourage me to see others in a better light. - Posted by: Kathy Ryan (daughter) on: Sep 11, 2013

  • Ed introduced me to university level English study in my first year and was kind enough to endure my self-indulgent poetry with gentle criticism and direction. We remained friends, albeit sporadically and by distance for the next 30 years. My thoughts to his family. - Posted by: David G. Williamson (Former Student) on: Sep 10, 2013

  • Ed was a wonderfully understated writer, whose humour entertained and whose insights into the human condition were rich and deep. We were privileged to be his friends and to enjoy his wit. Our sincerest condolences to Carol and the family. - Posted by: George and Julia Melnyk (Friends) on: Sep 09, 2013

  • He was indeed one of the most sensitive, encouraging and gentle teachers. He was part of a great group of Northrup Frye students: Ed Kleiman, Jack Woodbury, Vic Cowie who made life absolutely wonderful to attend English Literature classes at the University of Manitoba in the Seventies. He made his mark as a great Teacher and family man. - Posted by: yvonne kipp (student and friend) on: Sep 08, 2013

  • Enrolling in Ed Kleiman's creative writing class at U of M changed my life. He assigned weekly writing tasks which he read diligently and his feedback always emphasized our strengths rather than our shortcomings. - Posted by: Armin Wiebe (former creative writing student) on: Sep 08, 2013

  • Love You Forever Dad... - Posted by: Ben Kleiman (son) on: Sep 08, 2013
