Mom will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years, Richard (Dick); daughter Darlene; three sons Richard (Lynda), Neil (Shelley) and Dwayne (Cindy); as well grandchildren Jack and Julia Armstrong will also remember their Amma dearly. Laura is also survived by her sisters Mable and Julie; along with in-laws Polly, Bill (Corrine) and Leonard; as well as many nieces; nephews; and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Anna and Arni Thorarinson; in-laws Ellen and Gerald Armstrong; siblings Eileen and Arni; sister-in-law Elaine and brothers-in-law Ray and Roy. On June 29, 1957 Mom married Dick. She went to Normal School (Teacher's College) and started teaching on a permit. Her much loved career as a teacher spanned from 1955 to 1968. She taught at White Poplar, Lilydale, Thalberg North, Garson, Tyndall, Greenwich, and Hazel Glen schools. Later Mom worked for Statistics Canada. Being a dedicated member of her community, Mom helped with fundraising and canvassing to better the Village. She enjoyed planning teas, fowl suppers, and bridal showers. She joined many clubs over the years. Mom was a 4-H leader and belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Mark's United Church, Ladies Eagles, and the ELW group in Selkirk. She was the local historian for the area providing information to anyone who asked. She volunteered her time to do seniors' taxes and all were very grateful for her assistance. Mom's other talents were decorating wedding cakes for family and friends along with her love for cooking and baking. Neighbours and friends always enjoyed the Christmas baking. Mom was proud of her Icelandic heritage. She enjoyed genealogy, gardening, and flowers. She was a lifelong learner and had a terrific memory for dates and facts. Mom loved family gatherings, as these events meant everything to her. She always enjoyed a good game of cards. Amma's most precious loves were her grandchildren Jack and Julia. Her favourite saying to her family was "Now be good." A Celebration of Laura's Life will be held Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Evangelical Lutheran Church 329 Clandeboye Avenue, Selkirk, MB.
