(CHARLES) ALLAN JEFFREY It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Allan Jeffrey, our loving husband, father, grandpa and friend, on September 8, 2013, at the age of 73 years. Allan was predeceased by his parents Mel and Rose, and siblings Arnie, Joe, and Gladys. He is survived and will be dearly missed by wife Linda, of 41 years, sons Ryan and Cory, daughter-in-law Sylvie, his beloved grandson Xavier of whom he was so proud, siblings Don, Marie, Art, and Gary, and sister-in-law Marilyn. Allan is also survived by many nephews, nieces, extended family, and countless friends all over the world. Allan was born in Swan River on August 31, 1940. He got his Bachelors degree at the University of New Brunswick, followed by his Masters in Fire Science from the University of Washington. He worked as a surveyor and forest ranger before becoming the director of the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, where he spent over 22 years before retiring in 2004. Allan and Linda raised a family in the same house in Charleswood for 31 years before moving to Victoria Beach to enjoy their retirement. "Big Al" as he was affectionately known, didn't slow down in retirement as it merely provided him with more time to devote to his family, friends, and many hobbies. Allan loved golfing with friends and family, working at the Charleswood and Grand Pines golf courses and especially making golf clubs for young kids. He was instrumental in the creation of the Keep Charleswood Green community group, and always looked forward to golfing in Phoenix where he and Linda spent their winters, usually entertaining guests with his endless jokes and stories. Allan had a generous and caring personality, and if you were ever looking for him, Mr. Fix-It was probably found in his shop working on something for a friend. He enjoyed his Model A car club, and was especially proud to take his family and friends for rides at the lake in his 1926 Model T. A celebration of Allan's life will be held at Breezy Bend Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Allan's memory to the Children's Hospital Variety Heart Centre care of The Children's Hospital Foundation, CE501-840 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1S1, 204-787-4000, www.goodbear.mb.ca

  • Al Jeffrey was respected within Manitoba's forestry community for his professionalism and commitment to protect and manage forest lands. More so, Al was a gentleman, mentor and friend ready to share his knowledge, good times, home made beer, and his love of golf and life. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Jeffrey family. - Posted by: Jeff Delaney (Manitoba forestry colleague and friend) on: Sep 25, 2013

  • Mr Jeffrey, as he was known to us kids 30 years ago, was always there with encouraging words or a helpful hand for hockey bags after games and practices. He definitely had the most interesting basement to play in, with all sorts of tools and tons of golf clubs, new and used. I think we may have gotten under his skin a few times and likely heard a few "Ryyyyyannnnn"'s from upstairs but a nicer man you could not find. Our thoughts are with the family on Al's passing. - Posted by: Rob, Brandy, Charly and Ryan Butler (Family Friend) on: Sep 16, 2013

  • We could spend a long time remembering the many good times we shared with you and Allan, suffice to say we will never forget him. He was a force to be reckoned with, friendly, funny, loving husband and father and grandfather, and certainly not least, highly intelligent. Always a big smile and a smart ass remark. We loved him dearly and we will never forget him. Stay well and strong Linda, Ryan and Cory, Sylvie and adored baby boy Xavier. Our thoughts are full of you and our beloved Allan. - Posted by: Irvy and Cec danard (Cousins) on: Sep 16, 2013

  • I was deeply saddened and shocked to learn of Al's passing. Al was a close colleague and a true friend. I had the pleasure of working with him during the formative CIFFC years and later for him and with him on various national and international fire management initiatives. He was an innovator and a leader as well as a mentor who placed an indelible stamp on Canadian Fire Management. His open and friendly disposition was always in the forefront. Truly, one of the good guys. He will be missed. My sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Linda and family. RIP, Big Al. • What can we say Pete has lost his best buddy and "Dad". Pete will miss AJ for all the things they did together. From collecting wood for the woodstoves, getting rails for the golf course, golfing and of course the friendship and being at the shop. AJ taught Pete logging 101 and he will pass this on to people around him. Pete was never far when AJ was around he could be found right beside him. Pete's trip to Arizona is a holiday he will never forget. Pete will miss him dearly and couldn't have asked for a greater friend. Rest in peace AJ. Love to Linda and the family our hearts go out to you. - Posted by: Peter & Kim Turcotte (friends of the family) on: Sep 11, 2013

  • Worked with Al from 1990 when I was appointed to lead the then Wajax Fire Control business. In business, you often hear bad stories about government or para government institutions lack of cooperation with the private sector but I can attest that in the Forest Fire context, the relationship was a model - always, always one of close and harmonious cooperation. It was Al who made it so !! He created and led CIFFC as a unique organisation of inter provincial cooperation unrivalled in Canada. Never a complaint about, or from Quebec, where I live, (indeed if there was any moaning, it might, early on, have been about those folks over the Rockies!!!! Compare the costs of his early organisation of this National activity with the immense expenditures on resources and organisations in the U.S. I travelled widely with Al to Russias Far East, Australia, etc, and, in my farm near Cornwall, ON, there are now trees of Siberian Pine from seeds brought back for me by Al as well as disease resistant Elms grown from root cuttings he gave me. Blessings to his family specially to Linda and Cory who, I hope will remember my visit to him in Thailand when he was teaching there. Finally, of course I will miss Al's humour - his frequent emails, comic, political and, sometimes risque, but always, always entertaining - Posted by: Jim White (Ex colleague in the Wildfire community and, I hope, a good friend) on: Sep 11, 2013

  • Big Al, you will be missed. There is so much I remember from years ago and to today, with stories plentiful to keep you always laughing or maybe it was vise versa! You always had a welcoming heart of gold, always was busy with one thing or the next, but my all time favourite had to be the basement in charleswood!, never thought we would see the day that it was actually finished!
