ROSE DANYLUK (nee LABAY) February 27, 1917 - September 15, 2013 On Sunday, September 15, we bid farewell to our beloved mother, Baba, and great-grandmother Rose Danyluk, who passed away at the age of 96. Rose was predeceased by her husband Nick in 2003; her parents, Andrew and Tekla Labay; her sister Anne (Lamb) and four brothers: John, Tony, Edward, and Rudy. She was also predeceased by many dear friends who she missed greatly: Sophie, Marie, Kay, Stella, Barbara, Josie and Anne, among others. She is survived by her five children: Donna (John Alexander), Darrel (Bonnie), Andrea (Edward Tokaryk), Rene (Paul Stanway), and Ted Danyluk (Shelly Halverson). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Michelle, Mark (Lindsay), Robert, Matthew, and Stephanie Danyluk; Scott (Johanna) and Nicole Stanway; great-grandchildren: Brianna, Jordan, Sofia and Rowan; foster son Russell Harder of Winnipeg; and many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends. Rose was born on the family farm in Dolyny, MB, later moving to the homestead in Menzie, where she grew up and attended school. She married Nick on July 18, 1942, and Nick's position in the RCAF took them to Toronto, the Queen Charlotte Islands, and Jericho Beach in Vancouver. She spoke often of her time on the Queen Charlottes and in Vancouver. After the war, they returned to Manitoba, initially close to home in Oakburn, where Rose opened her own hairdressing shop. In 1954, they moved to RCAF Station Gimli, and lived there until they moved to Winnipeg in 1967. Rose was a very active member of her parish wherever she lived: sang in the choir, was a long-time member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and was always involved in various aspects of fund-raising. She was taught how to make altar bread by her grandfather when she was very young and was recognized for 30 years of this service to her church. Rose continued the Labay tradition of building churches wherever they lived and became a founding member of Sacred Heart Parish in Gimli; of St. Basil the Great Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg, and was involved in the construction of Holy Eucharist Church in Oakburn. Rose enjoyed travelling with her husband, family, and friends throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe, all her life. While in high school, her dream was to visit Rome. This dream became reality in 1975 when Nick and Rose visited Europe. Love of God, of family, and of friends were what governed her life. She was happiest when her house was filled with people. Her children were her pride and joy and she delighted in the visits of her grandchildren. Rose was an accomplished cook and hostess, and after Nick's retirement, she enjoyed summers in Oakburn, with the sound of the grandchildren raiding the garden for peas or playing "kick the can" after dark. She loved quilting, knitting, sewing, doing cross-stitch, and was a lifelong, voracious reader. She loved to garden, often stating that a garden was the one place on earth where you were closest to God. She had a passion for politics and discussed events in Ottawa with her son-in-law, John, until the end. She valued honesty, sincerity, fairness and humility in people and passed these qualities on to her children. Rose was a highly intelligent woman who spoke often of the friends and family who had formed the precious images of the kaleidoscope of her life, and she will be missed greatly. The family would like to thank Dr. Russel Albak for his care for Mom over the years; the staff on 3N at the Grace Hospital, especially Griff and Les, who were so extraordinarily kind and gentle with Mom in May. Mom spent the final days of her life at Riverview, and very special thanks are extended to Dr. Garcia, Chaplain Al, and the staff of 3E, for the care and comfort they provided to both Mom and the family during her time there. Prayers will be held on Thursday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Basil's Parish, 202 Harcourt St., Winnipeg. Divine Liturgy will be held on Friday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m., also at St. Basil's Parish. Interment will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21 at St. Michael's Parish Cemetery in Olha, MB. Those who wish to make donations in Rose's memory may choose either the Olha Cemetery Fund Ltd., P.O. Box 297, Shoal Lake, MB R0J 1Z0; the St. Basil's Parish Building Fund, 202 Harcourt St., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3H3 or a charity of their choice. Funeral arrangements by Rae's Funeral Home, Shoal Lake, MB, 204-759-2160. Vichnaya Pam'yat!

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Contact with Rose was through her family and at political events. She was a very sweet and friendly lady who made a great impression on us. Our condolences to her family. Her smile will be missed by all who knew her. - Posted by: Bill and Joyce Alexander (family friend) on: Sep 22, 2013

  • Your Mom/Baba was a great lady. I sang with her in the St. Basil's choir for a few years...she was always very quiet and thoughtful in Church; truly a role model. She was very welcoming to me and had a most sweet sense of humour. A few times I asked her for details, regarding cooking of this or that...particularly borscht...and she always answered me in such a lovely way. I'm sure her borscht was just delicious. May she rest in Peace. Вічная пам'ять. - Posted by: Leanna (Bilowus) Obirek (Friend) on: Sep 19, 2013

  • Dear Family: My father, John Henry Maduke, was a brother to Telkia Labay, Rose's mother. They were close in age. eighteen months apart. My Dad shared a birth date with Rose, February 27th. We lived and live in Saskatchewan. As children, and later, we enjoyed visiting our relatives in Manitoba. I have very fond memories of Rose and her family. May your memories sustain you.
