Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES MCKELVIE April 15, 1916 - September 17, 2013 Charles "Charlie" McKelvie passed away quietly on September 17 at the age of 97 in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a young man he became an active member of Chalmers United Church, serving as a leader for the Tuxis Mohawk Square boys group. In 1934 he joined the firm of James Richardson & Sons, for what would prove to be a 47-year career, which encompassed his enlistment in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and his wartime service overseas as a Leading Aircraftsman radar technician with the 410 Squadron. Having married Nettie Thompson Murray in December of 1942, the couple began raising their eventual family of five. Following the War, Charlie resumed his financial career which featured a seven-year stint managing the Richardson Securities office in New York. During his tenure he oversaw the acquisition of Richardson's trading seat on the New York Stock Exchange. Charlie served as a Councillor for the Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach where the family enjoyed summers at their cottage on Sunset. He and Nettie volunteered with the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, were members of the Manitoba Club, and of the Niakwa and St. Charles Country Clubs. In 1958 to 1959, he served a term as president of the St. Andrews Society of Winnipeg, a position previously filled by his father, John Dale McKelvie from 1944 to 1946. An ardent outdoorsman from his youth, Charlie taught all his children to swim, canoe, fish and shoot, and, as an avid duck hunter and supporter of Ducks Unlimited, enjoyed nothing more than a brisk, autumn day out with his Labrador, Ruler. Retiring from Richardson's in 1981, he embarked on a peripatetic post-retirement entrepreneurial career that was very much in keeping with the character of the Charlie everybody knew. He compassionately and lovingly cared for his mother, Lilias, his mother-in-law, Jessie Murray and his wife, Nettie, during their declining years, being predeceased by his parents, Lilias (nee Craig) and John Dale McKelvie, his sisters Marion Coleman and Margaret Kennedy, and his dear wife, Nettie. Charlie is lovingly remembered by his children and their spouses: Heather, Louise (Blair), Evelyn, David (Karen), and Stuart (Susan); by his grandchildren: Regan Blakesley, Amos Buriak (Elizabeth), Blair (Marisa) and Colin (Lisa) Aspinall, Aaron McKelvie, Meaghan Orlinski, and Ian and Jessie McKelvie; by his great-grandchildren: Fiorella Arellano, Maya Martinez, and Ella and Lucy Aspinall, and by all his nieces, nephews, family friends and colleagues. The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff of WeCare and of the Calvary Place Personal Care Home who cared for Charlie during his final years. A memorial service will be held at the Buntain Chapel of Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave Street, Winnipeg at 11:00 a.m. on October 5, with a luncheon following. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations in Charlie's memory to the Calvary Place Personal Care Home, 1325 Erin Street, Winnipeg MB R3E 3R6.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

T and the Barrs were inseparable in the 1930s and the 1940s. There are photographs of Charlie carrying me on his shoulders when I was about 4 years old and culminating with the last of the series taken 61 years ago with Charlie on my shoulders. Having Charlie as a role model and a mentor gave me a head start after I followed him into the securities industry. Charlie loved life, loved his family and also loved me. I feel that I have been blessed by our association. - Posted by: Larry Barr (friend) on: Oct 03, 2013
