VERNON MEESE November 16, 1957 - September 18, 2013 It is with deep sadness that we announce Vernon's passing. He will forever be in the hearts of his wife Lesley, son Robert and daughter Katherine. Also left to mourn are his sisters Inge-Lore, Carol-Anne, and Kim, along with their respective families. He will also be missed by his constant companion, Shadow, who knew Vernon was sick even before the doctors did. He was predeceased by his beloved mom, Edith (Lippelt) and his father-in-law, Ken Wauer. Vernon was a Charleswood boy through-and-through and was proud when his children attended the same schools he had. He recently enjoyed reminiscing with his friend Bob (while doing Jager-shots) about their crazy exploits in the 1960s and 1970s. Vernon loved vehicles and owned over 50 cars, trucks, and motorcycles during his lifetime. He knew his way under a hood and was always there to offer help to anyone who needed it. He liked to lend a hand and could be seen mowing lawns or shoveling driveways for neighbours. Vernon had the ability to enter a room and talk to anybody about anything. At 6'4" he stood tall and could easily be found in a crowd (which Lesley always appreciated). Our achievements should not be measured by possessions, but rather, in what remains when a voice is silenced. Vernon's greatest achievement remains with his children, Robert and Katherine. He has imparted old-fashioned values and down-to-earth knowledge which they will carry with them throughout their lives. Vernon insisted on humour, mostly irreverent, in facing the inevitable. His medical teams were always taken aback by his jokes and frank outlook, but soon realized that this was just his way of getting through it all. He fought the good fight and Vernon showed much tenacity throughout his battle. Our family wishes to thank Drs. Bard, Czaykowski, St. Godard and their respective teams for the care given to Vernon over the past years. As well, to the CancerCare "angels" whom Vernon looked forward to seeing at each appointment. Not one to stand on ceremony, Vernon has requested no funeral. Cremation has taken place. If friends wish, donations may be made in Vernon's memory to CancerCare Manitoba. So Vernon, go for a walk with Mom, throw a ball for Tramp and play a round of golf with old friends. Tschuss, Vernon. You will be greatly missed.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • My sincere condolences to Vernon's family. A mutual friend just shared the news of Vernon's passing and I was taken back to the days of our early youth in Charleswood playing in the athletic fields across from the Meese house on Hilton. Vernon was always a wee-bit taller than me and I remember him from those days as a gentle giant. And I see from the description of his life that he carried forward into adulthood his gentleness and kindness-to-others. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Rolf Abt (child-hood friend) on: Nov 13, 2013

  • Lester - I am so sorry for your loss - just heard about it today. I'm sure you will remember the good times. Life is never fair, nor easy. "Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, love leaves a memory that no one can steal." My best to you and Robert and Katherine. - Posted by: Lorraine Taylor (Friend) on: Nov 03, 2013

  • Lesley and Family I am so sorry to hear about Vern My thoughts and Prayers are with you - Posted by: Nancy Harrison (Pink) () on: Oct 01, 2013

  • Peace be with you as you mourn the loss of your husband, father, and brother. Vernon always made us laugh in Sunday School. It made it a joy to be there. Such a caring and honest person. So sorry he had to go so soon. - Posted by: Kim Dorn (Woodard) (Childhood Friend) on: Sep 30, 2013

  • Vern and I first met during our high school days at Charleswood Collegiate. With our common interests of cars and sports we became good friends. We even shared an apartment for a while after high school. We would bump into each other from time to time after that and shoot the breeze and try to catch up. I was saddened by the news of his passing. My condolences to his family. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Mike Clayton (Friend) on: Sep 30, 2013

  • I was never as happy to see anyone as the day that I first met Vern. His presence in that LAC classroom made me finally feel safe. And then to find out that he was married to Lesley, who I knew from Grant Park, was the icing on the cake. We parted ways but bumped into each other at various Special Ed functions and he always had another wonderful story to tell me about Robert and Katherine. To me, his pride in his children was always evident, as was his love for for his wife. We have lost a good man. Hugs to you Lesley. - Posted by: Luba Krywonizka (Friend) on: Sep 28, 2013

  • I remember teaching Vernon at Royal School in 68/69, I think, about grade 5. He was quite a character - lots of fun to have in class. Carol-Anne, I remember your great smile, too. I send much love to you all and sincere sympathy as you deal with your loss. - Posted by: Caroline Steven (Holland) (teacher) on: Sep 28, 2013

  • Sincere Condolence to Leslie, Robert and Katherine. Having lived next door to the Meese family since they moved to Lynbrook Dr. I just wanted to say what a wonderful neighbour Vern was. Always friendly, cordial and helpful to everyone. One day when I was away I remembered I had left the hose running. One quick call to Vern and he took care of it. Another time, we were across town when Ryan realized he had left the barbecue on, again a call to Vern and he came to our rescue. He would often be seen out on the street playing with Shadow, or talking to any and all of the neighbours. During the last while when snow clearing was difficult for me, I would look out my window and their was Vern cleaning my driveway and then on to help other neighbours. Vern's spring project was to keep the drain clear down at the end of the street, so our lawns wouldn't be flooded. As I recently said to the family - every street should have a "Vern". What a sad loss for his beautiful young family. My Bible based hope is that we will see our departed ones again on an earthly paradise. - Posted by: ELFIE MARTENS (NEIGHBOUR) on: Sep 28, 2013
