LILLIAN (LIL) BALAK Peacefully with family at home. It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother and sister, Lil Balak on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at the age of 81. Lil will be sadly missed by her husband, John, her sons, Kelly (Eleanor), John Jr. and Terry (Theresa). Lil also leaves to mourn her brothers, Ron, Henry (Shirley), John (Ruth) and Murray as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Anne (Parasiuk) and father, Walter Slezak. Lil worked on the family farm until her late 20's when she moved to Brandon to work as a house keeper for the MacDiarmid family. Lil and John were married in Neepawa on August 19, 1961, and moved to Winnipeg to begin their new life. In 1963 a work opportunity in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, resulted in a move to that northern community where they lived for several years before returning to Winnipeg. Lil was a stay at home mom for most of her married life until she moved to her current home in Transcona where she quickly made friends and visited often with the neighbours. She worked for Home Care and also had a number of clients for whom she did home cleaning. She always brought a smile to her clients' faces, with her wonderful sense of humour. Lil loved this work and was very unhappy when health issues forced her to quit her jobs. She then devoted her free time by helping her boys and family members in any way she could. While being in the kitchen was not always Lil's forte, she made awesome perogies, borscht and beet top rolls/dog bones, and with her generous nature, she always shared with family and friends. She loved when family came together and everyone was at her place! The family wishes to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre and Concordia Hospital, the Home Care staff and the Palliative Care Nurses who treated Lil with kindness and compassion. Lil's immediate family thanks their , neighbours, friends, and other family members for their visits, phone calls, food and flowers during this difficult time. Vita Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Cremation took place on September 17, 2013. A private family interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to Michael, Director of Vita Funeral Home for his compassion and understanding. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society.
