HELENA GIESBRECHT (HARDER) Peacefully, Mom left us on September 23, 2013, at Concordia Hospital at the age of 93. She leaves her husband of almost 65 years, Abram, daughter Shirley Baillie, son Harry (Linda) Giesbrecht; grandchildren Kevin (Jenn) Baillie, Candace Nield (Dewayne Garrow), Mathew Giesbrecht, Steve (Britni) Godkin; six great-grandsons Cullen Nield, Kyle and Dawson Baillie, Logan and Tannor Garrow, and Chase Godkin. She is also survived by her sisters Tina Reed, Susie Blatz, Sadie Petkau and Mary Brennan, brother Abe Harder, and many nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her parents Abraham and Tina Harder, brothers Peter and John Harder, sister Margaret Blatz, son-in-law David Baillie, and three stillborn sons. Mom was born on August 28, 1920, in Lowe Farm/Hanover, Manitoba. In the spring of 1948, while working at a cannery, Mom, who was 28 years of age, met 20 year old Abram. The courtship was brief and on November 1 in Vineland, Ontario, they married. Soon after they returned to Manitoba to start a family. Mom's working career began with Eaton's and at 63 years of age she retired from Barbara Ellis. Although she enjoyed working, mom's life was her family. She loved sewing and crocheting and as each grandchild and great-grandchild was born they received a handmade crochet blanket. Mom loved to garden, especially her rose bushes. She enjoyed cooking and canning. The smell of baking throughout the neighborhood brought friends and family together at the house to enjoy a slice of hot bread or a bun fresh out of the oven along with a cup of coffee. She always looked forward to Wednesday evenings at St. Michael's Church to play bingo where she often won the jackpot. She especially loved the scratch tickets. Our thanks to the 3rd floor Concordia Hospital Staff and Chaplain for making her short stay comfortable. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Viewing will be held prior to service at 1:30 p.m. Interment to follow in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. • Our families have known each other for over 50 years. Mom, Dad, Helen and Abe used to brew a pot of coffee at their house if the other didn't have any brewed and take it across the back lane to have a cup with each other. My kids grew up calling them "uncle Abe and Auntie Helen". Although we haven't seen each other over the years, we always talk about Helen and Abe all the time. Heartfelt sympathies to Abe, Shirley, Harry and their families. Helen was a kind and gentle woman who loved her family dearly. Rest in peace Helen. - Posted by: Shirley & Arnold Lamboo (Friends) on: Sep 29, 2013
