VICTORIA MENDRO Victoria Mendro was born in Calder, SK on August 23, 1930. She was one of four children born to the late Mary and John Mendro. Vicky has two older siblings, Rose (Maluta) and Peter and a younger sister Maria (Collins). Rose and Maria reside in Calgary, AB; Peter resides in Brandon, MB. Vicky's childhood was spent mainly in Roblin, MB. The friendships she established in those early years are still intact today, some spanning 70 years. When she finished school she worked at the Roblin Hospital until 1953 when she moved to Winnipeg. There, she worked at Canada Packer's for a time before she began her career with Manitoba Telephone System in 1957. Vicky was an MTS telephone operator with 32 years of perfect attendance. After her retirement in 1991, Vicky enjoyed many activities volunteering with the MTS Pioneers, line dancing, bowling and travelling all over North America. Vicky was also active as a church senior, enjoying the luncheons and card playing. She also enjoyed the company of her many dear friends here in Winnipeg and all over Canada. Throughout her life, Vicky put great emphasis on her family and she was always an integral part of their lives. It started as soon as her siblings moved from their family home, with Vicky visiting them as they started their families. Vicky always shared her time with all their families and became very close to her four nieces and two nephews: Alicia Maluta of Vancouver, Marcia Maluta and children Adam and Emma of Calgary, Gregory and MaryLou Mendro and sons Martin, Monty and Max of Winnipeg, Ron Mendro of Flin Flon, Michele and Wayne Doverspike and sons Jason and Justin of Swan River and Karla and Steve Ramsay and daughter Brooke of Flin Flon. Also important to Vicky was her designation as godmother to Bill Klysh and Don Dmytriw. Being a part of their lives was important to her and she spoke of them often and fondly. One of the fondest memories her nieces and nephews (and grand-nieces and nephews) hold dear is Vicky's greatest gift ... her time. Aunty Vicky spent countless hours with us, teaching us how to play cards, first the memory game and eventually the game of Cribbage. A visit from Aunty V was always anticipated with joy! She was interested in what we did, who our friends were and what was happening in school. She was genuine in her love for us ... and she shared her joy of living. As we were reminiscing about her, we all agreed that not once had we heard her speak a bad word about anyone which is probably why we enjoyed spending time with her -- it was always positive and happy! The photos we have of Aunty V with us and our children will always be treasured as they will remind us how much she loved us. She will be missed because of how she made us FEEL: loved, respected, admired and worthy. Aunty V taught us what it means to love. Victoria Mendro fell asleep in the Lord on September 25, 2013. Vicky has left all who knew her with cherished memories -- memories of a woman whose optimistic outlook on life left this world a warmer, kinder place because she was in it. A link in the chain has been broken, it doesn't seem the same. But as the good Lord calls us one by one the chain will link again.
