Date of Passing: Sep 26, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAURA RASMUSSEN Laura Rasmussen widow of Louis Rasmussen, mother to son Ludwig (deceased) and daughters Lynn and Marsha, grandmother to Amanda; passed away on September 26, 2013 at the age of 78 years. Laura Rasmussen was born near Ashern on the way to hospital on a cold November day in 1934. She was small at first but feisty. With the loss of her mother at age three months Laura was adopted by her aunt and uncle Margaret and David Spence who homesteaded in the Siglunes district. The family started off with two cattle, unbroken land and a lot of hard work to produce a large mixed farm with over 100 cattle, several horses and other animals. She and her sister Christine worked hard on the farm milking up to 14 cows twice a day and many other chores. She and her sister rode horses bareback to school from age 10 and up - if there was a teacher available. Laura met her husband while working as a cook at a fishing camp. They married in 1954 and eventually moved to Winnipeg in the early 1960s and overcame many challenges there. She cared well for her family and worked outside the home at times. As her family grew she became a full-time homemaker for the former Children's Aid Society then eventually Child & Family Services and worked in many challenging situations. Laura lived life to the fullest and enjoyed her family, her faith and the Sparling United Church group. She proudly wore her UCW pin for years of service. She had several hobbies and knitted and crocheted many afghans, mitts, socks, scarves. In her senior years she began taking French lessons at the Seniors Age & Opportunity Centre, diligently attending classes for a number of years and speaking to us. All her life she tried to live with dignity and determination. In her final three hours before passing she was determined to sit beside the bed and did so with little help. In her final moment she remained tired but aware and gave her family a few last words of advice before slipping away. Mom, Gran we love you always. Funeral service will be held at Bardal Funeral Chapel, 843 Sherbrook on Friday, October 4. Viewing at 12:00 noon. Service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Reverend Scott MacAuley of Sparling United Church officiating. www.bardal.ca/condolences.

I was thinking about you Aunty Laura today. I miss talking to you. This time of year, you always needed someone to talk. I could hear in your voice the sadness of missing someone. You would talk about your son & mother Virginia. I would listen to you, & try to cheer you up. Now it's my turn, missing you dearly. You were a wise woman, & not afraid to share your opinion. That's what I miss. It would of been your birthday this month. Well I'll stop here, Happy Heavenly Birthday Aunty Laura. - Posted by: Glo (Niece) on: Nov 29, 2020

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I miss Mom very much. I miss her phone calls every evening. It is difficult to realize that I will never hear her voice again and that the phone call from Mom will never come anymore. - Posted by: Lynn M. (daughter) on: Oct 02, 2013
