Eng., retired Air Canada executive, passed away on September 26, 2013, age 92, after a brief and courageous fight with cancer. Clayton is survived by his wife Elaine, of 63 years, son Raymond, daughter Holly (Gary Flack), grandchildren Lauren and Connor, sister Vivian Woodsworth and nephews Glenn and Bob Woodsworth of Vancouver, BC. Clayton was born June 25, 1921 in Hanna, Alberta. His early years were spent in Burnaby, BC and Winnipeg, MB. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) in 1943. He joined Trans-Canada Airlines (Air Canada) in May, 1943. In 1946 he was seconded to Canadair, taking an active part in the design and flight testing of the North Star aircraft and later acted as TCA technical representative to A. V. Roe in Toronto during the design of the Avro C-102 Jetliner. He served in various capacities for the airline, including as Viscount Project Engineer, Aircraft Evaluation. He was responsible for the selection of such aircraft as the DC-8, Vanguard and DC-9 and was instrumental in the introduction of the first turbo-fan engine into commercial service. He was involved in airport development issues and developed the original specifications for the regional jet. For many years he gave an annual lecture at Oxford University on aviation economics. In the late 70s he introduced personal computers to Air Canada. He wrote computer programs on these newly-introduced personal computers to create an Airline Simulation Model. After his retirement as vice-president, he provided aviation consulting services for many governments worldwide, such as China, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. He was a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the Professional Engineers of Quebec. A memorial service will be held at Cedar Park United Church on Tuesday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Park United Church, 204 Lakeview Avenue, Pointe Claire, QC, H9S 4C5.
