MICHAEL ALECK MITENKO It is with regret and sorrow that the family of Michael Aleck Mitenko announce his passing as of Friday, September 27. He is survived by his wife Elva, and by his sons Paul (Donna) and Graham (Terrye), and by his grandchildren Hugh (Janine, and great-grandchildren Max, Ben and Sam), David (Ciara, and great-grandson Killian Mac), Sarah (Peter), Andrew and Katherine. He was predeceased by his first wife Mary, and his oldest grandson Mark. Mac, as he was universally known to his family and friends was born July 21, 1912, the eldest of three children of Michelina and Aleck Mitenko (Olga and Margaret died before him). He grew up in Brooklands, the son of an immigrant family, but managed to complete his high school education at United College. It was there that his athletic skills were discovered, and it was his ability at hockey that he admitted helped him maintain employment during the depression. Mac eventually went into business on his own and learned many of the skills of carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and mechanics, so that he was always able to construct and repair things to the amazement of his sons and grandchildren. He married Mary in 1936 and it was with her brothers Mike and Bob that he ran Adams Fuel Company for many years, and later developed Linklater Camp as a recreational and fishing resort. His first marriage was a happy one, and was followed in 1995 by a second marriage with Elva Juba, with whom he spent many devoted years. Mac took part in the affairs of his community, and he was involved with the Ukraine Professional and Businessman's Club, the Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club, the Holy Family Home, and lately the Sons of the Ukrainian Pioneers, a social lunch group for those of Ukrainian descent. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage, and was one of the few remaining of that first generation born in his country. Mac loved Canada dearly, and recognized the opportunities it gave him and his family. His years at Linklater Camp reinforced his appreciation of the outdoors life, and especially of fishing and his keen memory was always able to remember the ones that got away. His friends and family will celebrate Mac as a good man, always ready to serve his family and community. A private gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My parents, John and Min Lanoway, were close friends of Mac and his first wife Mary - close enough that they talked my Mum and Dad into buying a retirement home in Bonita Springs where they wintered. My brothers and I spent many, many wonderful vacations there and I truly believe that is where we discovered our love for fishing! I still tell two fantastical fishing tales starring Mac and his son, Graham. My goodness, the memories. Mac was an incredible guy - smart, generous, witty and always willing to pitch in and help, no matter what the chore or problem. I can still hear his laugh! His passing brings an end to an era - many loved this special man! - Posted by: Linda Lanoway (family friend) on: Oct 06, 2013

  • Dear Family, I have very fond memories of Mac and Mary Mitenko and the early days of Linklater Camp. My mom and dad were involved in the earliest years of the development of the camp and me and my sister Adrienne were fortunate enough to be there too. Catching live minnows in the stream, fishing to our hearts content and swimming at Champagne beach. Your folks were the most welcoming hosts. Even when they didn't have a cabin available, we were still invited. I remember your mom put 2 kitchen chairs together and I slept on them as a make shift bed. I also remember your mom feeding the squirrels out back of the main building and letting me feed them too. My experiences at the camp helped foster a love of nature in me that was instrumental in me and my husband Karl buying and operating Big Whiteshell Lodge to this day. Mr. Mitenko and his lovely and gracious wife Elva visited us here and we spent time reminiscing. Please know that we remember "Mac" Mitenko as a mild mannered, gracious and generous man who loved nature and valued friends. My folks always spoke very highly of him. We hope that your sadness will soon be replaced by fond memories, Linda and Karl Fabian - Posted by: Linda Fabian ( nee Lucko) (Daughter of Nick and Chris Lucko ( Lux) ) on: Oct 05, 2013
