KAREN SUE AVERY (nee SARBIT) March 16, 1945-September 26, 2013 With heavy hearts, we announce that our beloved Karen, passed away with her family at her bedside after a brief battle with cancer. Karen was predeceased by her parents, Rose and Nate Sarbit. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jerome, daughters, Robyn Avery (Don), and Tammy Squires (Chris); grandchildren, Danica Avery, Alexis Squires and Nathan Avery-Jasper, the apples of her eye; sisters Merle Sarbit (Sam), and Teresa Pester (Greg); brothers Sam Sarbit (Claudia), and Joel Sarbit (Allen), niece Megan and nephews, Avram, Matthew, Michael and Jared, as well as many close relatives. Karen was best known to hundreds of Winnipegers as the friendly, smiling lady who worked as a fragrance demonstrator at department stores for the past 45 years. She worked until she was recently diagnosed with her illness. Karen loved her work and many of her customers became close friends. She was a super salesperson and last year was awarded with an all- inclusive trip to Paris, France. Jerome and Karen enjoyed holidays in Hawaii, Florida and Las Vegas, as well as summers at their cottage at Winnipeg Beach. Karen's most precious moments were spent celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions with her family and close friends. Karen touched the hearts of those who knew her bringing joy and light to their lives with her vibrancy and her selfless positive nature. She was always there to give a helping hand to those in need. The funeral took place on Sunday, September 29 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, Rabbi Green officiating with interment following at the Shaarey Zedek cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Rick Wolfson, Sheldon Earn, Avram and Matthew Sarbit and Michael and Jared Pester. Honorary Pallbearers were Sam Czemerys, Greg Pester, Don Jasper, and Chris Squires. Special thanks to Rabbi Green, and to those who supported the family throughout Karen's brief illness. The family would like to acknowledge the staff on GA4 at the Health Sciences Centre for their outstanding care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

  • I worked with Karen for Loreal at The Bay and other stores. She was an amazing woman. When I started with the company she took me under her wing and taught me everything I know!   • I worked with Karen at the fragrance counter at the Bay. I enjoyed her friendship and deep care and passion she had for people and her job. She showed the most compassion after my operation at that time, this I will not ever forget.
