EVELYN MASSEY At 2:55 p.m., on Friday, October 4, 2013, at the St. Boniface Hospital, while embraced by her children, Evelyn Massey (73) was called to God's house. Evelyn was born on Friday, January 12, 1940, in Morris, MB. and she was the second eldest of eight children, from Edwin and Nettie Janzen (nee: Reimer). Evelyn lived her early years in several southern Manitoba farming communities; however, in 1954, the family moved from Mather, MB, to Winnipeg (Charleswood). She lived her adult life entirely in Winnipeg and on August 15, 1959, she and Cecil Thomas Massey were married. Mom entered the workforce early and worked in the photofinishing industry, graphic arts, retail and data entry, but spent the most time in the hospitality industry and the last 10 years of her working career, as a Health Care Aide at the Riverview Health Centre in the Palliative Care Program. Evelyn did not finish high school when she was a teenager, but worked diligently (while employed) and earned her diploma in 1987, completed a bookkeeping program and the Health Care Aide program (1996), all through Red River Community College. Mom's passions involved almost all things outdoors, including harvesting the garden, canning, camping, fishing, swimming, knitting/ crochet and square and round dancing with Dad. As mom entered her later years her interests turned to crafts like ink and oil sketching and ceramics. Whatever she did, she was very particular and took a lot of pride in it! Of course Evelyn's greatest love was for her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, which gave her immeasurable comfort throughout her life and in particular, her final days. Evelyn was widowed in December, 2003, but is survived by; daughters Theresea (and David) and Belinda; son Daniel (and Dawn); grandchildren Shelly, Alexander, James, Brett, Vic, Courtney (Sam'), Jackson, Lucas; great-grandson Jude; step grandchildren William, Paul, Robin; step great-grandson Austin; brother Edward; sisters Irene, Hilda and Dorthy; predeceased by brothers; Henry (Jerry'), Peter; sister Erna A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Thursday, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. ASL interpreter provided. Our family and friends would like to express our most sincere gratitude to the health care professionals at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Your kindness and compassion was much appreciated by Evelyn, our family and friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to any one of the following: MB Lung Assoc., CancerCare MB or the St. Boniface Hosp. and Research Foundation. • I thought of Evelyn as my aunt my entire life, she was my mom's best friend for most of my life and our families were very close. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a beautiful loving lady but she is now with Uncle Danny (Cecil) and free of pain and suffering, my heart and thoughts are with the family as they say goodbye. Love you always Aunt Evie. - Posted by: Denise Dunham Shirran (family ) on: Oct 11, 2013

  • I have known Lynn my whole life. She was my 2nd mom. As a child I remember Belinda and I always being together sharing our birthdays. I will miss you. My heart is breaking as I say goodbye. - Posted by: Connie Dunlop () on: Oct 10, 2013

  • My heart is heavy with her passing. I have known this wonderful person literally my whole life. Starting from the moment I was born, to her good friend Mamie Dunlop, and she held me in her arms. Her daughter Theresea and I were constant companions in those early years. In one way or another our families have been entwined for more than sixty years. Goodbye and God bless you Evelyn, I will miss you. - Posted by: Matt Dunlop (Friend) on: Oct 09, 2013

  • It was great to know Evelyn when I put a Reimer book together and she gave me information that was very much helpful. I was always wanting to give her a copy of the book and never did. I enjoyed my time with her at that time even if it was a short time. I am sorry for your loss of your Mom, and grandmother. I feel with you since I am still grieving over the loss of my husband just 3 and a half months ago. She is with her Lord and Saviour and we will see her again. - Posted by: Ruth (Reimer) Buhler (2 counsin) on: Oct 09, 2013

  • My oldest sister, she will be greatly missed. But I know she is no longer suffering and is a much better place with her savior. I love you sis. Love Hilda - Posted by: Hilda&Terry Plunkett (Sister & Brother in Law) on: Oct 08, 2013

  • My sister Evelyn was my anchor and never too busy to be there for me when I needed her. We prayed, laughed and cried together. We shared so much. She will be in my heart forever. My sister is with her Lord Jesus and at peace, her battle is won. She never let that terrible disease of cancer beat her spirit and faith in her love for Christ. She was a woman of courage. My thoughts will be with her. - Posted by: Irene Shearer (Sister) on: Oct 08, 2013

  • Evelyn was my big sister. For years we were not close, but after our father's death we did find a way to be closer. I spent a little time with her after a hospital stay in 2010 and learned that I really did love her and I am so sorry that we wasted so much time not being sisters. But I am so greatful for the time we did spend together these last years. We became shopping pals on her visits to her son in St. Albert we managed to do a little damage in the jewelry departments of different stores. We managed to help Peter Nygard do very well. I will treasure the times we had together as adults, and try to push aside the many years before we became friends and sisters. With God's blessings we will meet again where both of us will be able to run and laugh. Love you #1 from #5 - Posted by: Dorthy (Janzen) McPhee (Younger sister) on: Oct 08, 2013

  • Thoughts and Prayers to you all at this time. She is finally happy and with Cecil again. Love you! - Posted by: Avril and Gary Kousof (Friends of Theresea) on: Oct 08, 2013

  • She was older than I was but she was always fun to be with and to share memories of earlier years. She is free of pain and sorrow and is with her Lord who she loved. Our thoughts are with you today. - Posted by: Bernie&Irene Driedger (cousin) on: Oct 08, 2013
