Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCLIFFORD EUGENE ROSS Peacefully on October 7, 2013, with his loving family at his side, Clifford Eugene Ross, aged 89, went to be with his Lord and Saviour. Born in Canard, Nova Scotia on June 25, 1924, where he spent his youth. He was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Mary Ross, his brothers Arthur, Norris, Albert, Lloyd, Doug and sister Alice. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years Joan (States), children Judy Harper, Gail Brickhouse, Debbie Williams (Dennis), Tony (Rosa) and Karen Abas (Brad Malcowich), 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, brother Lawrence, sisters Gertrude, Muriel and Tina and numerous nieces and nephews. He loved his entire family dearly. He proudly served his country in the Second World War with the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment. Although he was wounded in battle, he continued to serve until the war ended and was discharged in January 1946.When he came home from the War, he was fluent in seven languages. Like most Veterans, he did not speak much of his service overseas, but he was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #141. Dad was employed by Canadian National Railway for 20 years, worked a short stint as an Orderly at Deer Lodge Hospital before moving onto Canada Post where he retired in 1985 after 26 years. He was recognized for his faithful service at Canada Post by a commemorative plaque and gold watch. He had a strong work ethic which he passed on to his entire family. An avid reader and intellectual, he maintained his razor sharp wit to the end of his life. He was a gentle and kind man who loved children. He was not a quitter and loved to see his family achieve their goals. He was a brilliant conversationalist who embraced all that was good in people and did not suffer fools lightly. He took pride in his participation at Canada Post replying to the letters sent by children to Santa Claus every Christmas. He also participated in the drive to have a Remembrance Day wreath laid in honour of Black Canadian soldiers who served in the Second World War. Dad was an avid gardener and he loved sharing the fruits of his labour. He loved golfing, hunting, fishing and playing cards with his brothers. Always chasing the millionaire dream, he loved his scratch tickets, playing the lotto and busied himself with jigsaw; crossword puzzles and the Free Press Jumble. The family would like to thank the many friends, relatives and the community who embraced Dad throughout his stay in Fisher Branch. Many many thanks to Donna Lindal, his wonderful home care workers and Chalet staff as well as Dr. Wolford, the Nurses and Staff at Percy E. Moore Hospital in Hodgson, Manitoba. We would like to thank Ghaly and Boyd Abas for the continual love and support for Dad before, during and after his hospital stay. To Dr. McPhee, we would like to send our most endearing Thank You for the honest and forthright manner in your personal care of our father. As Dad said "Don't Cry, Be Thankful and Grateful". To my dear sister Joan--it is with a sad and heavy heart that I send condolences and all my love to you on the loss of your dear husband Eugene. I'm so sorry that I can't be with you as my health doesn't permit me to travel. I want you to know that Eugene will be missed dearly by myself and my family here in NS. He will always be in our hearts and we will think of him fondly. We have many good memories of Eugene that we will always cherish. To my nieces and nephew and families I also send my condolences and loving prayers to you all. The loss of your father will be felt for a long time to come. I know this to be true as I lost my husband Bill 2 yrs. ago and we are still grieving. We are told that the healing and pain of the loss of a loved one will come one day at a time by leaning on the Lord always. Today I pray that the Lord will surround you all with his love and keep you strong as you go through this most difficult time. To my wonderful sister Joan and family, we extend our sincere condolences. "Gene" was forever a gentleman, scholar and a devoted family man. His quick wit I can attest to when I last visited the house on Stella St. He looked at me and said "Gloria, company are a lot like fish - after a few days, they begin to smell"! From that I took my cue, and there was easy banter between us from then on. Upon my departure, he extended an invitation to return at anytime - I am fairly certain he meant it! God's speed my friend! - Posted by: Gloria States-Brothers, Cameron Brothers & Family (Sister-in-law) on: Oct 11, 2013
