MARIA PASTRICK (nee WIEBE) On October 19, 2013 our dear mother passed away at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her husband Alfred, parents Heinrich and Elizabeth Ewert, five siblings in Russia, and sisters Elisabeth Rempel and Gertrude Fenske in Canada. Left to cherish her memory is her sister Elsa Henkel, daughter Elvira Madill, son Bill (Shelley), grandchildren Thea and Desmond Madill, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was born in Russia on September 17, 1926. In 1943 her family fled to Germany where she worked as a farmhand until immigrating to Canada in 1949 with her sister Elisabeth, niece Liz and nephew Henry. Here she worked as a nanny and quickly learned to speak English. She later worked for Paulin Chambers Candy and Biscuit until her marriage to Alfred in 1959. They lived in St. James and raised two children. Summers were spent at mom's favourite place, the cabin at Otter Falls. Mom loved swimming, blueberry picking, sewing and upholstery, and had a special love for animals and nature. Later in life she worked for Zellers until retirement. Becoming a grandmother soon became the focus and joy of her life. Mom was a tough woman. In childhood she survived typhoid and malaria. She also beat cancer 21 years ago. In 2007 she moved to the Charleswood Care Centre where she lived until her passing. The family gives special thanks to her dear friend Mary Witzke who was unfailing with her friendship and love. The family also wishes to express their gratitude for the staff at the Charleswood Care Centre. They kept mom comfortable with their care and compassion. A service celebrating Mary's life will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23 at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society or The Mennonite Central Committee.
