MARGARET (NICKI / PEGGY) KATE MORIEN (NICHOLS)
Born: Jul 03, 1925
Date of Passing: Oct 18, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET (NICKI / PEGGY) KATE MORIEN (nee NICHOLS) July 3, 1925 - October 18, 2013 In the early hours of Friday, October 18, 2013, our dear mother Margaret found her rest. The fourth of six children born to Victor and Idyth Nichols, Margaret grew up on the family farm near Sanford, Manitoba. In 1943, she joined the Air Force, being posted to Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Rivers, Regina, Rockcliffe, and Washington, DC. Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1946, Corporal Nichols completed high school and enrolled in the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1950. While working in the nursery at Victoria General, Margaret met and soon afterwards married Antonio (Tony) Morien. With a growing family (and chinchilla business), Margaret and Tony built their longtime home in Charleswood and moved there from their first house on King Edward Street. The Moriens' extensive gardens produced an abundance of fruits and vegetables. In addition to the many hours spent canning, pickling, and freezing, Margaret always enjoyed baking. Both family and friends benefited from her angel food cakes, butter tarts, and legendary oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Sanford, St. James, and Charleswood United Churches nurtured Margaret's faith, and she spent many years volunteering with them as a Sunday school teacher, Outreach member, and church Elder. Margaret's heart of gold was reflected in her desire to connect with all of the people she encountered. Whether it was to celebrate a birthday, acknowledge an illness, or just to show she was thinking of someone, her "newsy" letters and telephone calls kept her in touch with an extensive network of family and friends. Children especially enjoyed the cartoons, riddles, and jokes "Auntie Margaret" shared with them. When arthritis in her fingers finally made it difficult for her to use her trusty typewriter, Margaret started to hand write her notes. And when she could no longer write, daily calls from Haney Street or Pembina Place Personal Care Home still connected her with family and friends. Predeceased in 2008 by her husband Tony, Margaret is survived by her children Carol-Ann (Ron), Blaine (Natalie), and Murray (Brenda), grandchildren Angela (Drew), Shannon (Jeromy), Ryan (Joanne), Michael, and Christopher, seven great-grandchildren, and her treasured extended family of friends and relatives. Our family would like to thank the many family members, friends, spiritual advisors, and healthcare professionals who cared about, and for, Margaret throughout her life. Because of you, she felt safe and listened to. We thank you for your care, friendship, and genuine concern. A memorial service for Margaret will be held at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Winnipeg Harvest or a charity of your choice.

I never met Nicki but have heard so many stories about her over the years from my Aunt - Aunty Dody. Aunty Dody went to Nursing School with her and they have remained friends ever since. I know my aunt is grieving deeply for the loss of her dear old friend. I just wanted her family to know how deeply my Aunty loved an cared for her. RIP Nick, and God Bless. - Posted by: Janis Smith (Niece to life-long friend Dorothy (Dody) Scott) on: Oct 28, 2013

We got to know Murray and his family when Scott and Murray worked together in 1984. When we met Margaret we were welcomed like family. Always so thoughtful, Margaret always sent cards for Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries and she never missed. What a truly special lady to make so many others feel so special. - Posted by: Scott & LeRae () on: Oct 26, 2013
