Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCALVIN HUGH MCDONALD LLOYD In Toronto, October 27, 2013, in his 96th year. Son of Rev. G. S. Lloyd and E. P. Lloyd of Cornwall, ON. Husband of Joan (nee Gulston). Predeceased by his sister Lois Jamieson (Oshawa). Father of David (Atlanta), Derek (Calgary), Dorothy (San Francisco), and Mary (Memphis). Stepfather to Marni Thornton (Oshawa), Ian Thornton (Toronto) and Paul and Deirdre Thornton (Toronto). Father-in-law to Nancy Lloyd (Atlanta) and Jim Weidhaas (Memphis). Uncle of Margaret Jamieson (Toronto), David Jamieson (Cobourg), Gordon, Mark, Debbi and Cathi (Cerasani) Miles (Winnipeg). Grandfather to Samantha, Charles, Catharine, Matthew, Jon, Daniel, Chase and Corey. Great-grandfather to Nadège. Hugh was born in Glencoe, Ontario in 1918. After high school in Midland, he attended the University of Toronto graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) in 1940. He worked for the General Chemical Division of Canadian Industries Ltd. in Montreal until 1949, when he joined Armco Steel Corporation in Guelph, ON. With Armco he moved to Winnipeg, where he retired in 1983. At 29 Hugh was ordained as an elder in the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul in Montreal. He served as an elder in Montreal, Guelph, Winnipeg, and Toronto. Hugh served on national committees coordinating stewardship and budget. He was Commissioner to the General Assembly on four occasions, and served two terms on the Knox College Board of Governors at the U of T. He volunteered for the National Office of the Presbyterian Church of Canada in 1985, developing a Wills and Bequests Program for the National Presbyterian Church. In 1988 he married Joan and moved to Toronto. Hugh was a faithful member of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, and in Toronto, joined the Boulevard Club. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of the National Church Office that assisted Hugh and made his "second career" so enjoyable and fulfilling. Hugh's avocation was playing piano and organ, and his talent in this area led to his filling in for the regular organist and choir leader when needed at the Montreal church. He carried this tradition of part-time organist and choir leader at St Andrew's Church in Guelph and First Presbyterian Church Winnipeg. Hugh's interest in organ music and design culminated in 1967 when he had a tracker action pipe organ built by Paul Ott and installed in his home. He successfully campaigned for a similar organ at First Presbyterian Church Winnipeg and churches and chapels in Toronto. These unique instruments will be Hugh's legacy to Canadian organists and will continue to inspire them. In 1992 Hugh received an honourary Doctorate of Divinity in recognition of his contributions to the life, mission, and work of the Presbyterian Church of Canada for more than 50 years. This honour, extended to a lay person in the church, is extremely rare. It was bestowed in the Church of St. Andrew and St Paul in Montreal. The family expresses their sincere thanks and appreciation to the doctors and staff at Revera Westside LTC for the compassionate care Hugh received throughout his stay there and especially in his final days. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St West, at Windermere, east of the Jane subway, on Friday, November 1 from 2 - 4 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church 73 Simcoe St on Saturday, November 2 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in The Great Hall. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Wills & Bequests Program at the Presbyterian Church of Canada, in the name of Hugh Lloyd, or to the charity of your choice.

Hugh was a warm and wonderful father-in-law. I enjoyed our visits when he came to Calgary. He was always happy, planning visits with friends and going to church. I will fondly remember his warm smile. My condolences to his wife and family. - Posted by: Marla Klassen () on: Nov 04, 2013
