ALEXANDER DOBROWOLSKI March 16, 1932 - October 25, 2013 On Friday, October 25, 2013 Alex peacefully passed from this life at age 81 years. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 48 years Natalie (nee Klymkiw) and his children and grandchildren: Peter (Laura), Jennifer, Julia and Anna Dobrowolski of Toronto, ON: Kristin (Robert), Brandon and Matthew Early of Dallas, Texas; Andrew (Kate) Dobrowolski of Anola, MB; and Michael Dobrowolski of Winnipeg. Alex was born in Elmwood, Manitoba, on March 16, 1932 the youngest son of Ukrainian immigrants, Peter and Pollyanna Dobrowolski. He quit school early to help support his family and worked as a brakeman and fireman with the Canadian National Railway. He also spent time in the Royal Canadian Air Force. At the prompting of good friends, Alex went back to school and studied Law at United College and was called to the Bar in 1962. He practiced criminal, civil and family law but gradually focused on corporate and commercial law and served as council for many successful Manitoba small businesses. He was very dedicated to helping his clients and over the years many of them became his closest friends. Most recently he joined he law office of Peter and Peggy Genakis. In April 2013 Alex suffered a stroke and had to retire from the profession to which he dedicated so much of his life. Alex never forgot his humble beginnings and was always active within the Ukrainian community. As a young man he was involved with the Ukrainian National Federation and sang with the O. Koshetz Choir. Throughout his adult life he served in many volunteer capacities with Ukrainian organizations such as the Ukrainian Professional Businessman's Club, the Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre and the Ukrainian National Federation. Community service was a big part of Alex's life. He served on the Salvation Army Community Advisory Board for decades, including the role of president, and was instrumental in opening several of the Salvation Army rehabilitation facilities in downtown Winnipeg. He was active in the Kiwanis Club for more than 30 years, was president of his local chapter and secretary of Kiwanis Homes. Natalie and Alex moved to Toronto this summer to be closer to their grandchildren who brought them so much pride and joy. Natalie has been battling ALS for several years and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, people make donations to the ALS Society of Canada www.als.ca ALS Canada, 3000 Steeles Avenue, Suite 200, Markham, ON L3R 4T9 (T) 905-248-2052. • Alex...from when I was a young girl, I still have memories of quizzing you to no end about praticing law. How do you be a lawyer, how do you defend your clients, what if the Judge says "this/that'. How do you get all the information, how do you know you have enough information, what if they're not telling the truth...yes, these were the starter questions, then going on to you and I doing a "court room experience", so I'd know what it would be like to be a lawyer, which sadly I did not become. Every time we were over, I put you through this. A special special, educational memory that I still think of to this day Thanks for all all special talks Alex, till we meet again.... Natalka...I love you!!!! God Bless you to be as well as possible! Always in my thoughts...always in my prayers. Love, Lesia - Posted by: Lesia Lucenkiw (Cousin) on: Oct 30, 2013

  • I am sorry to hear about Uncle Alex. My condolences to Aunt Natalie and my younger cousins Kristin, Peter, Andrew and Michael. I fondly remember when I was a child, driving across town with my parents over to Christmas dinners at Uncle Alex and Aunt Natalie's house and visiting with my cousins. Their house was filled with the mouth watering aromas of turkey, ham, potatoes and all the fixings. It was always a fun night and one that I looked forward to every year. - Posted by: Pam Doyle (Cousin, I think?) on: Oct 30, 2013
