JO-ANNE WEIR October 19, 1958 - October 30, 2013 Peacefully on the evening of October 30, 2013, Jo-Anne ("Jo") Weir passed away surrounded by the family she loved and was so proud of: her forever partner and spouse, Karen Pirnie; daughters, Elizabeth Pirnie (Rob) and Catharine (Peter) McCullough, and in her heart, pet and constant companion, Sue. Preceded by her father Hugh John (Jack), Jo's passing is also deeply mourned by her mother Rooney Weir, her sisters Rhonda (Jan) and Diane (Darrell), brother Scott (Karen), nieces and nephews Stewart (Carla), Laura (Josh), Steven, Corey, Jessie, Mitchell, and all of her aunts, uncles and cousins; in particular, Auntie Cathie, who held a special place in Jo's heart. A proud Westwood Warrior and U. of M. basketball alumni, Jo followed her athletic prowess with a long and inspired career working with young people with special needs. It is difficult to put into words the transformative effect she had on those she worked with, both student and colleague alike. Known for her professionalism, commitment and unrivaled sense of humour, throughout Jo's 30+ years of teaching she nurtured and enhanced the lives of each student whose path she crossed. While she embraced both her Scottish and Icelandic heritage, it was her great-grandmother, Margaret Johnson, and Jo and Karen's purchase of a cottage (and later home) in Arnes, MB that inspired her 2007 Master's Theses, Undan Snjobreidunni (What Lies Beneath the Snow) revealing the contributions of Icelandic pioneer women to adult education in Manitoba 1875 to 1914. In recognition of this contribution to both feminist research and the Icelandic Community, Jo received the 2008 Graduate Student Award from the Canadian Association for the Study of Women and Education. A copy of her thesis has been added to the archives of the National Library of Iceland. Jo was very touched and appreciative of the many acts of kindness she received from family and friends over this past year. Partner, parent, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, mentor, coach, comedic superstar: Jo was one of a kind. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, and with heartfelt gratitude, the family invites donations to the Gimli Hospital and to the hospital's Healing Garden. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

To Jo's family I was shocked to hear of Jo-Anne's passing. While I was not a close friend of Jo's, I do recall speaking to her at a couple Westwood class reunions. She was always ready with a friendly smile and a joke. She would have been an awesome teacher. Rest in Peace Jo! "Much laughter, wise beyond her years, loyal friend, gym rat". Those are the pictures in my mind when I think back to Jo-Anne in 1972 at Sansome Junior High. I was the new Phys. Ed. teacher and she was on my volleyball team. Reading through the comments I see my memories of her many attributes not only remained constants in her life, but flourished. My condolences to her friends and family. We are all made better by knowing her. - Posted by: Lynne Gauld (Teacher/Coach) on: Nov 06, 2013

I met Jo Anne three years ago when she was hired to work as a resource teacher for Teulon Collegiate. I remember her great sense of humor and candor. She was an advocate for all students and always willing to help teacher and students alike. I learned a great deal from her in the short time I knew her and will always remember her. Some people you meet make you better for having known them, Jo Anne was one of those people. - Posted by: Chris Gamble (Collegue) on: Nov 06, 2013

My deepest sympathies to Jo's loved ones. I played sports with Jo for many years and enjoyed her passion and her amazing humour. She gave me the nickname Auntie Vi, I think because I wore a violet jacket and was like everyone's Aunt at age 14. I treasure that memory. Jo will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. Jo Anne and I met at the University of Manitoba (Faculty of Phys. Ed) and worked together at the City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Summer play Programs. With her infectious sense of humor, Jo Anne had a natural way with kids and Staff members alike. Our paths crossed again some 25 years later when we were both Teachers at Miles Mac Collegiate. I will never forget her welcome to me as a new Staff member at Miles Mac which included her big smile and smart remarks about taking 20 years to catch up with her. She had placed a picture in my mailbox from the Summer play program from 25 years earlier - which showed us sporting the popular "Afro" hair do and elephant pants. Jo made learning so much fun for her Special Education students at Miles, and she created many memorable moments of laughter and fun for all of us on staff. She was a great role model as a Teacher and I know she touched the lives of every student and staff member who had the privelege to work together with her. The world of Public Education was a better place with her in it and she will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew her. - Posted by: Karen Knight (Collegue) on: Nov 05, 2013

I WENT TO MILES MACDONELL COLLEGIATE SCHOOL AT 757 ROCH AVE. JO ANNE WAS AN AWESOME TEACHER. WE HAD OUR HARD TIMES WHEN I GOT HER MAD BUT GOOD OLD ME TRIED TO KISS UP TO JO ANNE ALL THE TIME TO NOT GET HER TO BE MAD AT ME ANYMORE, AND IT WORKED. FROM TIME TO TIME THE BEST PART OF IT ALL WAS WHEN AFTER A WEEKEND WAS OVER ON MONDAY I WOULD GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND TALK ABOUT OUR FAVORITE SHOW, YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. WE WOULD TALK ABOUT IT FOR HOURS KILLING OURSELVES LAUGHING ABOUT IT UNTIL IT WAS TIME FOR CLASS. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER JOANNE'S LAUGH, SMILE AND GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. SHE WAS SO ONE OF A KIND. CLASS OF 2001 WAS HER FAVORITE. SHE WOULD ALWAYS TALK TO US ABOUT HOW ALL OF US WERE A GREAT CLASS TO HAVE. SHE WILL NEVER EVER BE FORGOTTEN. SHE HELPED ME THROUGH SOME HARD TIMES IN MY LIFE AND GOT ME OUT TOO. SHE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED BY THE SET PROGRAM AT MILES MAC. Dear Roonie, Rhonda, Scott, Dianne and Karen my deepest sympathy for your loss. My fondest memories growing up were at the Weir's, playing touch football on the front lawn of Browning school, just hanging out, a trip to Grandview, driving my very first van. Lol. Jo always being there whenever you needed to talk, never judging, just listening and giving her thoughts when asked. Years would pass and without fail when we crossed paths she'd just pick up where you left off, always welcoming, and forever joking around. A kind warm hearted soul has been taken from us, only to be placed in heaven so that others can share in what we've had, and deceased family and friends can reunite. God Bless you Jo, you will always be missed and never forgotten. Love Kathy - Posted by: Kathy Newcombe White (Friend) on: Nov 03, 2013

Every once in a while you meet someone who impacts you forever. I met Jo in Grade 4 in the Robert Browning school playground. She was the only other girl who wanted to play catch. We became fast and long friends playing softball and hockey together all the way through University of Manitoba. The hockey road trips are my favorite memories, belting out Elvis songs through North Dakota and Minnesota, her dad Jack taking us out to Country Kitchen after hockey practice. Tears are pouring down my face as I type this. She had the most wonderful sense of humor and would not be at all pleased that people are blubbering about her. Love to her family. - Posted by: Sue Gowanlock Swail (Old old friend) on: Nov 02, 2013
