Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLENA BALLAN (nee CHUBATY) June 27, 1929 - November 4, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lena Ballan on Monday, November 4, 2013, at the age of 84, after a courageous battle with cancer. Lena is predeceased by her parents Wasyl and Mary Chubaty, sisters Helen Samborski, Sophie Gay, Annie Salamcha, brother John Chubaty and son Joseph (in infancy). Lena leaves to mourn her husband Steve of 59 years, sons Randy, Garry (Debbie), Vernon, David, grandson David, sisters Teenie Kwasnicki, Agnes Derbowka, Jean Senavitch, Gloria (Wally) Urbanowich, Rose Deblois and Olga (Jerry) Nicholas, brothers Peter (Evelyn) Chubaty, Bill (Yvonne) Chubaty, Nick (Rose) Chubaty, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Lena was born in St. Malo, Manitoba on June 27, 1929. She lived and worked on her family's farm in Rosa, Manitoba until she met and married Stephen Ballan on June 19, 1954. Together they farmed and raised their four sons until moving to Winnipeg in 1966. Lena held many jobs over the years and retired in 1988 after being employed in housekeeping at Fred Douglas Lodge for 16 years. Lena had fond memories of her trip to Hawaii with family, travelling to Nashville, Tennessee, as well as the many family reunions that were held. Lena enjoyed reading, especially about the Royal family, embroidery, cooking and gardening. She looked forward to each spring so she could plant her garden, which she continued to do until two summers before her passing. She enjoyed preserving and sharing the bounties of her garden with family, neighbours and friends. Lena was always cooking; there was always something delicious simmering on the stove. Visitors to her home never left hungry. We will miss her perogies, borscht, fried chicken and donuts. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at CancerCare Manitoba and Health Sciences Centre for their compassion and care of mom. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Rosa Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rosa, Manitoba. Interment to follow at the church cemetery. Pallbearers are sons Randy, Vernon, and David, nephews Leonard and Patrick Derbowka, and family friend Brad Dreger. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

'Mom' always had a funny story to tell, and her home was always open for a visitor with a snack offered. Memories of her sarcasm still make me smile. - Posted by: Dennis Koniak () on: Feb 02, 2014
