Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN LEONARD GOYTAN February 13, 1925 - November 4, 2013 Surrounded by his loving family, John Leonard Goytan was welcomed into the loving arms of his Holy Father on November 4, 2013 at Grace General Hospital. John fought a hard battle and is now re-united with his beloved wife, Olga. John is survived by his three children, daughter Debbie, sons Greg and Michael (Christine), and much beloved grandchildren John and Annemarie, brothers-in-law Earl Mattson (Madeleine), Walter Nakoneshny (Lucille), sisters-in-law Edith Goytan (Neil), Cecile Nakoneshny (Donald), Betty Malowski (Mike) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father John, his mother, Magdalena, brother Neil and sister Madelaine. John was born on February 13, 1925 in Karlovac, Croatia. As a youth he enjoyed downhill skiing and aquatic sports. At the age of 13, he emigrated to Canada with his family on January 1, 1939. In addition to working on the family farm in McCreary, MB, he worked in the gold mines in God's Lake. He became a licensed mechanic working for Winnipeg Motors, he was self employed at Woodland's Gulf Service and later worked for the Dept. of Highways. He will always be remembered for his tenacity, persistence and innate ability to repair an item versus throw it way. As well, he had an appreciation for motor vehicles of all types and sports cars throughout his life. In McCreary, he met and married Olga, spending the next 57 years together creating a loving home and raising a family in Crestview, later retiring to the cottage in Belair. Family was extremely important to John and he took great pride in their accomplishments. He was always willing to lend a hand with whatever his children and grandchildren asked of him. His many projects included helping renovate his son's first home, constructing a garage when he was 84 years old, and building himself a new fence. Weekly family gatherings were cherished times for John. Planting an annual garden, especially potatoes, picking blueberries and ensuring there was adequate wood for the winter were John's primary cottage endeavours. In recent years, John became an accomplished cook, his specialty was ribs, prepared for many a family dinner. The family wishes to acknowledge the support and compassion of his doctors and the medical staff at the Grace General Hospital. Prayers will be held on Friday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Assiniboia Christian Centre, Blessed John XXIII Parish, 3390 Portage Avenue followed by the Funeral Mass celebration on Saturday, November 9 at 11:30 a.m. with Father Gerald Langevin officiating. We couldn't have asked for more kindly and generous neighbors than John and Olga. They will be sadly missed. We have an apricot tree in our yard that came from them. - Posted by: james skinner (neighbor) on: Nov 11, 2013
