Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLIZZIE CHAPMAN July 3, 1922 - November 4, 2013 It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother; Lizzie Chapman on November 4, 2013. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Churchill Health Centre. She was 91 years old. She was born on the Big Eddy Reserve at her home in The Pas and was delivered by a midwife. She spent much of her younger years moving back and forth between Split Lake and the Big Eddy Reserve with her parents. She learned many traditional ways and knowledge in her early life with her family. Her handicraft work in making slippers, and mukluks were well known around the world. Lizzie was a woman of great strength, and fortitude. She was very independent and worked hard all her life and took pride in everything she did. She is remembered for many years of community and church service work throughout her lifetime in Churchill and Thompson. She was always a strong, respected leader in her church service work with the Anglican Church wherever she resided. In July 1993, Bishop Tom Collings canonized her for her service work in the Anglican Church. She was also one of the pioneers of the early days of community health representatives back in the early 1970s. As she raised her family for many years on the Churchill Flats, she also 'adopted' many others in her life to extend her huge family even more. It was a true honour to have her acknowledge you as her 'son' or 'daughter'. She was loved and respected by so many people that are far too many to mention. She will be remembered forever in our hearts. Our mother was predeceased by parents; Hector and Catherine (Head) Spence and her siblings; Ahab, Mildred, Mervin (Levi), and Sarah Spence. Her husbands; Sam Pierre McGillivary, Alex Chapman and her children; Anna Edna Prince, Robert (Flicker) McGillivary, and Loreen McGillivary. Her stepsons; Isaac Keeper and Stan Sinclair. She will leave behind her children; Freddy (Edna) McGillivary, Belinda (Tony) Vandenbroeck, Louis McGillivary (Cathy), Stanley (Mina) McGillivary, E.Gordon (Joan) McGillivary, Nellie Chapman, Sarah Chapman, Winona (Billy Cochrane) Morrison, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous relatives; and many friends from the Tataskweyak Cree Nation (Split Lake) and Fox Lake Cree Nation (Gillam). Active Pallbearers: Anthony McGillivary, Leonard McPherson, Tom McGillivary, Ashley Chapman, Christopher Chapman, Austin McPherson, Sam Prince, Stewart Prince, Travis McGillivary, Jason Kitchekeesik, James Cody Morrison, Bird Cochrane, Sam Vandenbroeck. Honorary Pallbearers: Candida Botelho, Ila Morris, Dylan Burton, Hannah Bazlik, Sam(Hammy) McGillivary, Helen McEwen, Allan Spence, Louise Lawrie, Dorothy Morand (McPherson), Fanny Beardy, Janet Fontaine, Eileen Cook, Ann Harwood, Tom Collings, Ruthie Hart, Quentin Hart and all others who loved and cared for her. A Pipe Ceremony will take place on Monday, November 11 at 4:00 p.m. at the M.H. parish hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Our grandparents; Hector and Catherine Spence were traditional healers and our mother was influenced by these teachings in her early life. She always spoke fondly of those experiences and how her parents worked with our people in terms of healing. Wake services will begin on Saturday evening on November 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Margaret Henderson Parish Hall. Funeral Service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer on the Big Eddy Reserve at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Interment Emmanual Cemetery. Our family would like to thank everyone who helped from Churchill, Split Lake, York Factory, Thompson and The Pas who assisted us in bringing Mom and her family to her final resting place at Big Eddy Reserve. Kinanaskomitinan.

She used to take care of me during the day when I was 2 years old. My mother had to work during the day and Lizzie would often baby sit me. I have great memories of her sitting in her rocking chair looking down at me in that house by the tracks. She was one of the gentlest people I have ever met. She travelled down to Prince Albert, Sask after my Mother died so she could attend her funeral. That meant the world to me. I will never forget her. - Posted by: Davy Sims (She was my baby sitter) on: Jun 29, 2018

Liz Chapman was an amazing strong woman who worked hard all of her life. I met Liz Chapman in the early 90's in Thompson and she was truly a gifted woman with many talents. She was involved with the Church and helped many families as they transitioned in the urban settings. She will always be remembered by her friendly laugh and caring personality. It was a pleasure to know her personally...GOD Rest your Soul my Friend...KONRAD..... - Posted by: John Garrick (Friend) on: Jan 23, 2015

My condolences. My father was named after Hector, sadly my father passed away on Oct. 25, 2011. My mothers name is Catherine, an odd coincidence. :) Anyhow, I had just found out this tragic news. My prayers go out to Kokum Lizzie and her family. - Posted by: Cory Spence () on: Nov 14, 2013

I am sorry to hear of Lizzie's passing. I only knew her in her later years, as her memory began to fade, but she always carried a great dignity about her and was much loved by the nurses and physicians. She was clearly an honoured matriarch. - Posted by: Kelly Fisher (Churchill physician) on: Nov 13, 2013
