Born: Apr 21, 1947
Date of Passing: Nov 10, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMICHAEL EUGENE SCHARIKOW April 21, 1947 - November 10, 2013 Michael passed away on November 10, 2013 at the Health Sciences Centre after a short battle with brain cancer. Michael was predeceased by his father Eugene, his mother Elfriede and, brother-in-law Pasquale Peduto. He is survived by his son, Michael Jr. (Jolene) and his two granddaughters, Meghan and Emily, both of whom he adored; sister Ursula, brother Gene (Bev), nephew Carlos and family, nieces Kristin and family, Karen and family and Leanne. Michael is also remembered by Brenda, Michael Jr.'s mother and his longtime friends, Gord Katelnikoff, Ken Burrows, and all of his poker buddies. Early in his career, Michael worked in sales which took his travels to various parts of the country. For the past ten years he was employed by the Manitoba Government as a security officer, mostly at the Legislative Building. Michael was an avid sports fan and participated in many sports including hockey, rugby, squash and golf. He was a competitive player, no matter what the sport. Mike rarely missed the chance to watch his granddaughters play soccer. He was also known to be very vocal about city and government issues. He wasn't afraid to express his opinions to the politicians, keeping a watchful eye on them to ensure they were doing their jobs. If he thought they were neglecting their duties they could expect to receive a strongly worded letter from him. Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre (Dr. West and the Neuroclinic, Dr. Pilkey and Lisa Streeter, Orit Reuter, Dr. Schroeder and all the staff on RR6). At Mike's request his body has been donated to the University of Manitoba for research purposes. Cremation will take place and his ashes spread at one of his favourite spots in Sioux Lookout ON, where he loved to fish during the summer months. A celebration of his life will be held at a time and place to be arranged in the coming days. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

I met Mike about 20 years ago at Supreme Racquet Courts where we both played some squash and worked out. After Supreme shut down, Mike and I crossed paths again at "Sportex", another gym. Mike usually had a joke I hadn't heard and when not laughing at some of life's absurdities, we would "solve" many of the worlds problems. I'm so sorry and shocked to hear of his passing. We had again lost touch in the last couple of years. My condolences to his family and many friends. - Posted by: Murray Parker (friend) on: Nov 16, 2013
