DR. MAURICE SHNIDER DFC Died peacefully at Riverview Hospital October 3, 2013 at the age of 90. Left to mourn are his partner Sally Whan; his daughter Janet Brett, sons; David (Debbie) and Lee, grandchildren; Molly (Rob) Dorran and Brett Shnider, Andrea (Russell) Sward and Vincent (Gillian) Howie. Maurice was predeceased by his wife Renee (2004), his siblings Charlie Shnider and Myra Bass, and his son-in-law David Brett in 2013. Born in Sheho, Saskatchewan to Abraham and Bessie, Maurice, along with his siblings grew up in Inglis, Manitoba. Wartime took him to Bournemouth, England where he met his wife Renee. Together they built a home and raised their family in River Heights. On his return to Canada, Maurice entered the field of medicine and became a dedicated family physician. His patients were his friends, and he took pride and pleasure in being part of their lives. Maurice loved the history of the Second World War. His research skills led him to connect with people all over the world. He was a member of the Wartime Pilots and Observers Association and a regular contributor to publications committed to preserving the memory of those who served in the great wars. He was a unique and complex man: a decorated war hero who welcomed all challenges, loved a novel situation and was a first rate problem solver. He held himself to the highest standards, professionally and personally. He especially enjoyed the company of pilots, musicians and adventurers; passionately followed hockey and football, wrote clever musical parodies, and was a gifted doctor. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. Special thanks to Ian Maxwell, Maurice's dear friend. Mo and Ian shared a love of medicine and of hockey. Together they attended Jets and Moose games for many years. For his devoted medical care and abiding friendship, we are so grateful. The family wishes also to thank to Dr. Wolfgang Heidenreich, Dr. R Zarychanski, Dr. B. Penner and Dr. J. Lipschitz. Their kindness and assistance were deeply appreciated. To the staff at Riverview Health Centre 3E Palliative Unit, we cannot say enough about the excellent level of care Maurice received, thank you. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Drs. Aubu and Dr. Bristow, Nurse Paul, and nursing student Anne with whom Maurice made a special connection. Funeral services took place on November 5 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Pallbearers were Vincent Howie, Brett Shnider, Jack Neumann, Seymour Neumann, Scott Margolis and Bill Margolis. Honourary pallbearers were Dr. Ian Maxwell, Dr. Leonard Greenberg and Dr. Wolfgang Heidenreich. For those wishing, donations can be made in Maurice's memory to the Riverview Health Centre, or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I just heard about Uncle Maurice's passing away. I am so very sad to lose such a wonderful and warm human being who has always been such a welcoming and generous part of my Winnipeg family. Although life has taken me further and further away (to BC, now), I am glad I was able to bring Mom to Winnipeg last year to meet Sally and see Uncle Maurice again. My thoughts are with all of you, especially David, Debbie, Janet, Lee, and Sally. Much love from Leanna, Jovanni Sy, and Phyllis (Brodie) Lynch. - Posted by: Leanna Brodie (friend) on: Jan 15, 2014

  • I just recently learned of Dr. Shniders passing. On behalf of the Tiltman family I would like to offer our condolences. Dr. Shnider had been our family Dr. for approximately 45 years. He was and always will be one of the best ... How many times did we wait for hours in his office while he was off delivering a baby ... If my mother were here today she would be extremely saddened by his passing. I like to think they had a special friendship. May they both continue that friendship in Heaven. - Posted by: Kerry Tiltman (patient) on: Nov 24, 2013

  • Dr. Shnider was my family doctor and friend for over 50 years. He delivered all five of our children. He was not only a care-giver but often acted as a source of gentle advice. My first wife, Gaye, thought so highly of the doctor she named her last child after him. Maurie is now 36. A visit to the doctor often involved long conversations about family and the Blue Bombers. He was a talented man in terms of music and history. He was a great human being. The world needs more like him and is poorer without him. May he rest in peace, he's earned it. - Posted by: Gill Bramwell (Friend) on: Nov 21, 2013

  • Jan, Molly and Family, It is with great sadness that I learned of your father/grandfather's passing. I was also very saddened to learn through his obituary of your husband/dad's passing last year. My heart goes out to you both in the passing of these two wonderful men. Although my memories of them both are from a long time ago I think of you all more often than you may think. With sympathy and loving thoughts of you both during this difficult time. • Sorry to hear of Dr. Shnider's passing. We should all be so lucky to live such an adventurous life. He indeed had a story to tell and he told it well. We had lunch together on several occasions discussing our mutual interest in WWII. I was too young to serve but two of my brothers were KIA with the RCAF overseas. Also, as a folk music enthusiast (Co-op Folk Concerts) we shared our appreciation of Pete Seeger, the Travelers etc.. Rest in peace dear friend, and wear your DFC medal well.
