DR. RICHARD VERRALL Richard passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Deep River Hospital, Deep River, Ontario. Richard was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 8,1947 and lived in Sanford, Manitoba until he was 12 years old. It was a fun time to grow up in the country and he had happy memories there. In 1959, the family moved to Winnipeg and Richard went to Vincent Massey and then on to the University of Manitoba, graduating in Honors Physics, placing first in his class, achieving the gold medal. He spent many many years in post secondary education, getting his doctorate in Solid State Physics from Harvard University and a two year post doctorate study at Kings College in Cambridge, England. In 1979, he moved from Boston to Deep River, Ontario as a scientist with the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, eventually becoming one of the senior scientists. He loved his work at Chalk River. He commented once that he never wanted or planned to retire from his job. He was also an avid duplicate bridge player and for many years was the director of the club in Deep River. Chess was a close second, playing on line when he couldn't find partners in the town. Unfortunately, Richard had heart trouble which led to a stroke in his early 50s. He had to retire from his job which was a sad and difficult time for him. For the last 13 years with his health deteriorating, Richard managed to stay in his lovely home in the country because of the help of his closest and dearest friend, Madeleine Boulanger. Thanks also to Dr. Tom Greenfield and to the wonderful staff at the Deep River Hospital. Richard was predeceased by his father and mother, Harry and Nita Verrall and will be lovingly remembered by his twin sister, Barbara Parke (Ross), brother, Ron Verrall (Jennifer), his two nieces, Jane Verrall and Helen Verrall (Peter Say), and his nephew, Gord Parke. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 22 in Deep River. If you desire, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • As a classmate at Vincent Massey Collegiate, and Vice President to his President of our Grade 12 Class, I was always impressed with his kindness and peaceful presence. My condolences to my sports teammate, Barbara, and the rest of the family on their loss. - Posted by: Carol Greenaway Radway (Classmate of Richard, team mate of Barbara, at Vincent Massey Collegiate) on: Feb 03, 2016

  • I always remember Richard as the soft-spoken gentle giant (to me, he was tall). I met him and Barbara when they moved in from Sanford to Sandra Bay in Fort Garry. Richard and his Dad Harry taught me bridge and I remember with great fondness and affection the wonderful evenings we (Richard, Harry, Jackie Johnston, Allan Mowat, and I) enjoyed at their house. I shall miss his thoughtful manner and his quiet gentle way. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Bob Zoltok (Friend & Schoolmate in Fort Garry) on: Jul 02, 2014

  • Richard will be missed by friends and family. He was such an intelligent man, but had a panache for teaching others as well. We will miss his sense of humor! - Posted by: Lorraine Westcott (Friend) on: Nov 16, 2013

  • Remembering the Sanford days and the great friendship between the Harry Verralls and the George McKays. I was always struck by the closeness of the Verrall family. My sympathy goes to Richard's twin sister, Barbara, to older brother, Ronald, and to their families. What a talent; what a loss. - Posted by: Kathryn Patterson (nee McKay) (our parents had been great friends) on: Nov 16, 2013
