Condolences & Memories (23 entries)

  • Laurie May was and will always be a cherished friend. During my tenure at the MHSAA, Laurie was a great mentor and was always there to assist with tv announcing, track and field or whatever responsibility I needed his help with. He always assisted me unconditionally and with the best interest at heart. He had a unique way of dealing with people, which was also entertaining and contagious. As a Basketball Coach at DMCI, he was always willing to help out with practices, assist in designing offences, defences, etc. and attended many games. It was his support after wins/losses that will be appreciated more than he will ever know. His words of wisdom after games always kept me grounded. He simply had a way with dealing any situation I was experiencing. He truly cared. Laurie was the MC at our wedding and my wife and I were honoured that he would do it. Everyone that came into contact with him, will remember him for his wit, smile and sense of humour. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Debbie, as she is also a very dear friend and we can not imagine the pain she is going through at this time. Debbie; we are thinking about you!!! - Posted by: Carey Lasuik (friend at DMCI and through the MHSAAA) on: Dec 12, 2013

  • Condolences to Deb and the family. It was a pleasure to work alongside Laurie as a colleague in the division. Remembering the great times we shared as marshalls at the Provincial Track Meets and the bonds we made with coaches and athletes. We will always treasure the memories we have of him. - Posted by: Tom & Noel Stewart (Colleagues) on: Nov 29, 2013

  • As many people have already said, Mr. May was a truly genuine person with a huge heart. It was easy to say that Mr. May was a teacher who left an impression on me as he taught about both English and about Life so passionately. My most sincere condolences go to his family at this very difficult time - we are poorer for having lost him, but greater people for having known him. - Posted by: Kim Cabral (Former Student at DMCI) on: Nov 27, 2013

  • Mr. May was my teacher and my friend. He was the only person I considered talking to on my trips back to DMCI. I'll never forget the times we spent during English class picking March Madness games and discussing poetry. I think he was the only other person in the world I could talk basketball and poetry with. Find peace wherever you are. - Posted by: SJF (Former Student) on: Nov 27, 2013

  • Laurie was a loyal friend. You could count on him for anything. We taught together, played basketball together, partied together and the memories are eternal. There are not many people who possess the passion, enthusiasm and love for life that Laurie had. Our condolences to Debby and all of Laurie's family at this most difficult time. RIP dear friend. - Posted by: Ric and Betty Bender (Long-time friends) on: Nov 26, 2013

  • Laurie had passion and my world is ever made stronger because he was here. Laurie held a burning curiosity with his students and players that fostered you wanting to be near him. You just knew he had the vision to lead and knew the right path to take. I found Laurie taught with humour and engagement more than chalkboards and books. Laurie was a life force on the team with his quick wit and his eagerness to share the next great laugh. My memories are full and fond - from our initial meetings on opposing teams in my high school years to UM basketball to asking how my parents and our farm was doing later on. My deepest and most sincere prayers are with his wife and family in this time of sorrow. God bless. - Posted by: Brian Light (Former player UM Bisons) on: Nov 25, 2013

  • Mr. May was a wonderful Chemistry and basketball coach in my grade 10 year at DMCI. • Was very sad to hear of Coach May's passing, I heard he was sick and also heard he battled it hard to the end which doesn't surprise me. Only played for him for two years but he definitely left an impression on me as a player, coach and person. Coach May played an integral role in our team's success highlighted by a trip to the Final 4 (1985) and being #1 ranked for much of (1986). He wasn't just a basketball coach but took a genuine and sincere interest in you as a person. Living away from home is not always easy but he would make sure everything was ok. He was very competitive but had a great temperament to make him a quality coach and teacher. I'm sure his legacy will live on with his players/students - thanks Coach May and RIP!! - Posted by: Tony House (former player at U of M) on: Nov 25, 2013

  • I had the pleasure of playing for Laurie during some of my career 1983 - 88 at U of M. I will always remember Laurie for his driving experiences in both Colorado (through a blizzard with no wipers) and California where we got lost in L.A. but made the most of it. He had a terrific sense of humour and I know that will be sorely missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. My deepest condolences to the May family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. - Posted by: Terry Garrow (former player at U of M) on: Nov 25, 2013
