PETER BAUMGARTNER June 28, 1923 - November 24, 2013 Peter Baumgartner peacefully passed away at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Rosalia (née Sommerstorfer), his children, Peter (Evelina), Conrad (Liz), Rosemarie, and Eric (Marlene), and seven grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Peter was the middle child of 17 born on the family farm (Handlad) near Langeneck, Bavaria. His surviving siblings are Siegfried (Maria), Ludwig (Barbara) and Marianne (Ludwig). After surviving the fall of North Africa in 1943 and as a P.O.W. in USA and Wales until 1947, he apprenticed as a finishing carpenter, married in 1950 and immigrated to Edmonton in 1954. In Edmonton, Peter took great pride in his finely crafted homes and furnishings and especially his consuming hobby of lapidary and jewellery arts. Together with trout fishing, the family field trips exposed everyone to the beauty of nature throughout western Canada. His family thank the caring staff at the Thorvaldson Care Centre and more recently at Riverview. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to charities of your choice. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Pinawa, MB on December 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Dad, your great adventure in Canada is not over, it's forever.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • It is sad to hear of Peter's passing. As a friend of Eric, I used to visit their house quite regularly. I saw Eric's dad's handicraft in carpentry, but also in lapidary. I enjoyed looking at the collection of rocks and the pieces of jewelry he made. - Posted by: Karl Kliparchuk (Friend of Eric) on: Dec 17, 2013

  • Our condolences go out to the Baumgartner family at this time. He must have been very proud of his family. - Posted by: Peter and Shirley Cliche (Friend) on: Nov 29, 2013

  • Papa, I am going to miss your fantastic stories of rock hunting, the POW camps, the family farm, and your carpentry skills. Enjoy your on-going adventures. Love always, Ria - Posted by: Maria Baumgartner (Granddaughter) on: Nov 29, 2013
