JIRI JAN SICHLER
Date of Passing: Nov 26, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJIRI JAN SICHLER Peacefully on November 26, 2013 at Health Sciences Centre, Jiri Sichler passed away at the age of 71 years. Jiri leaves to mourn his passing his wife Marie; son Conrad (Leanna); the Denemarek family as well as many cousins, friends, and students. He was predeceased by his parents. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1941 while war raged across Europe, Jiri was the only child of a radio broadcaster and a seamstress. He had a passion for the outdoors and went on many adventures in the central European back-country. He had a keen mind for invention, electronics, drawing and poetry. While in graduate school, he found himself chaperoning students who took to the streets in 1968 during the Prague Spring. During that time, Jiri married Marie before heading back out into the streets. After Russian tanks rolled in, he listened to the advice of his parents and stayed in Winnipeg where he was on sabbatical at the University of Manitoba, a city where he lived until his death. In Canada, Jiri continued to explore the outdoors and took his family on trips to the lakes of the Prairies, the Rocky Mountains and the West Coast. He once attempted to use water as camp fuel, but abandoned the attempt after mathematical calculations proved to him that it would take an infinite amount of time to make tea. Jiri was a scientific experimenter whose apparati were his mind, paper, pencil, and some of the earliest computers in Manitoba. In 1980, he and Marie built a computer from a kit, and by December of that year they had it beeping Christmas carols. When Jiri found no computer program that could print the Greek alphabet and mathematical symbols he needed, he simply created a program that did so from scratch. Jiri used these in printing his research papers, of which he published over 100 in his career. He was generous with his family and friends, rigorous with his students and loving to his wife of 45 years. Jiri will be missed. The family would to thank all of the paramedics, the ICU staff at Health Sciences Centre and the Coronary Care staff of St. Boniface Hospital for their excellent care. Dear Marie, Conrad, and Leanna- We are so saddened by the loss of your dear Jiři. He was among a small but very special group of mathematicians who brought the Prague school of mathematical ideas as well as thinking about how one does mathematics to Canada and enriched our Mathematical heritage immensely. He brought with him his elegant European manners and a wicked sense of humour. We both enjoyed being guests at your home over the years, Marie. We still have your recipe for Czech dumplings which you both shared with us. It has been a honour to have known Jiři. We wish all of you strength and healing. When I would visit the Sichler's home, Jiri would enjoy talking about Prague over a glass of wine and food. He always kept me interested and full of questions. I would sometimes not understand everything he was saying and I would ask Jiri to repeat himself being I wasn't Czech. Jiri never would judge you and would make you feel like you belong no matter what. I am so privileged to have met such a man who was like a father to me. Jiri was a very good colleague at the Mathematics Department, U of M. It was always nice working with him. He was gentle, supportive and a very good team player. He didn't say much, but when he did it was always illuminating, thoughtful and constructive. A very good man. May his gentle soul rest in peace. - Posted by: Abba Gumel (Professional Colleague) on: Nov 29, 2013
