ARNOLD ROSS MCEWEN At Concordia Place on November 27, 2013, Dad passed away at the age of 93. He is survived by his four sons - Gary (Barbara); Ken; Doug (Judy) and Stewart (Lynne) and his four grandchildren: David, Allison, Steven and Sarah (Jeremy). Dad was predeceased by his wife Kay (Inkster); a brother Lloyd and his father Dr. Harvey and mother Bertha (Oughton). Dad grew up in Stonewall, Manitoba where he learned to curl, speed skate and play tennis. He enjoyed playing the piano at many functions. He loved duck hunting in the Stonewall Bog with his father and in his teen years accompanied his Dad "Doc Harvey" on many veterinary calls throughout the Interlake area. After leaving Stonewall in 1939, Dad joined the RCAF. As a Pilot Officer, Dad's duty took him to many bases including Brandon, Dauphin, Chatham, NB and Trenton, Ontario. Dad trained many navigators while flying over the Maritime Provinces. Dad and Mum were married at her home at 147 Helmsdale in 1942. Married for over 60 years, they raised four boys while residents on Hazeldell Avenue. Dad worked initially as a draftsperson with Hignell Printing; served as Editor of Dominion Bridge's national magazine The Span; became a publications editor for the Manitoba Medical Association; and then worked as Banquet Manager for the Marlborough Hotel. Dad's varied work career ended in 1978 when he retired as a Financial Advisor with Investors Group. When away from the office', Dad played piano for the EK Kiwanis Club; served as an Elder at John Black Memorial Church (where he also sang in the choir); and from 1953 to 1960 served as an elected member of the East Kildonan School District Board and River East School Board in its inaugural years. An avid curler, Dad was a member of the Stonewall Curling Club; Thistle, Fort Rouge and Elmwood Curling Clubs. Upon retirement, Dad renewed his interest in oil painting and playing the electronic organ. He had always wanted such an instrument and loved playing it well into his 80's. The family would like to thank the Fourth Floor staff at Concordia Place who provided exceptional care and compassion during his lengthy illness. A private family memorial service was held in Stonewall on December 2, 2013. MACKENZIE FUNERAL HOME STONEWALL (204) 467-2525 mackhome@mts.net

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Just a note of condolences to Ken and family on the loss of your father. So sorry Ken for your loss. I lost my father in 1974 at the age of 52 and I know that it is always a great loss as he is still in our hearts. - Posted by: JOHN Dale Watson (Friend ) on: Dec 08, 2013

  • To Gary, Ken, Doug and Stuart and families. We were so very sad to hear from Darlene of the passing of your dear Father and Grandfather. We have wonderful memories of many fun times with your Dad and Mom and all your family. We cherish the visit Ken and I shared with "Aunty Kay and Uncle Arn" at their apartment on Henderson Hwy. Your Dad was so proud of his paintings and we proudly hang them in our home today. We had another cherished visit with your dear Mom at the Kildonan Care home and a surprise visit when your Dad arrived. We will always remember the beautiful toast to the Bride your Dad gave Carol at our wedding. We have countless memories of times shared with them at our parents cabin at Betula Lake, visits at your home on Helmsdale and at our home on the Drive. When Ken and I moved to Alberta in l983 we left behind some very special people and your father was truly one of them. Our love to you all at this very sad time. With the fondest of memories always, Love Carol and Ken - Posted by: Carol and Ken Vokey (Long time family friends) on: Dec 01, 2013
