GERALD WAYNE PHILIPPS 1938 ! 2013 Gerry Philipps died peacefully on November 21, 2013 at the Tri-Lake Health Centre in Killarney, Manitoba, loved and supported through his final illness by his extended family Linda and Harley Johnson, and Bev and Travis Hilhorst, remembered and cared for by Sylvia Philipps, and daughter Lisa Philipps, along with her spouse Bernard Kalvin, and Gerry's grandsons Jonah Philipps (15) and Levi Kalvin (11). He is lovingly remembered by sisters Betty McDowall, and Diane Philipps, nieces Jane Philipps, Mary McDowall, nephews Stephen McDowall, and Geoffrey McDowall. Survived by uncle John Philipps of Vancouver, cousins Judi Rose, Kim Philipps, David Graham, and Mary Coleman. Predeceased by daughter Carol, and beloved soul mate, Judy Pugh of Killarney. Gerry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 14, 1938 to parents, Jim and Una Philipps. As his parents moved several times, his early childhood years were spent in Winnipeg, Brandon, Estevan, Saskatchewan, Fort Providence, NWT, and eventually in Boissevain, Manitoba. After high school in Boissevain Gerry attended the University of Winnipeg Collegiate for a year and then went on to several years in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. It was there he developed a keen interest in surveying, a career that allowed him the freedom of the great outdoors. As a young boy he learned to hunt waterfowl and upland game and his passion for that free life never left him. It was also at university that he met and married Sylvia Kemila, the mother of his two daughters, Lisa and Carol. Just after Survey School Gerry spent a year on the DEW line and on his return to Winnipeg joined the Survey Department at Underwood McLellan. He went on to work at Neumann Surveys for many years during which time he spent many long months in Northern Manitoba. Gerry played a leadership role working in harsh conditions to measure out previously uncharted regions of the province, laying essential groundwork for future infrastructure projects. In latter years he rejoined Underwood McLellan as a Project Manager on major projects in their Spantec division. An admitted perfectionist, he gained the respect of colleagues for his high standards, fairness to others, and ability to solve problems and deliver results. In 1998 Gerry moved to Killarney, Manitoba and began a new life with Judy and her family. After Judy's death in 2007 Gerry spent his time quietly maintaining the house and garden they had built together. Cremation has taken place. At Gerry's request there will be no funeral. The family will gather at a later date, to share their memories and stories. Messages of condolences may be made at Wheatland Funeral Service 204-523-7791
