CARL BASTIAANSSEN
Born: Apr 28, 1931
Date of Passing: Nov 30, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCARL BASTIAANSSEN Peacefully at his home on November 30, 2013, Carl Bastiaanssen passed away in the presence of his family. Carl was born on April 28, 1931, second eldest of nine children in Galder, North Brabant, The Netherlands. He grew up on a dairy farm, weathering both the Great Depression and the Second World War. His family was described as focused, hard-working and industrious. Carl attended the local school and returned home for his daily chores. Carl immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1952 with the hopes of fulfilling his dream of farming. He took a job on a farm, and spent his winters in the woods of Ontario cutting wood and selling it in spring. Carl returned to Holland on a business trip - the business of finding a wife! It was there that he met the love of his life, Hendrika. He convinced Riky to immigrate with him and they headed for Kitmat, British Columbia where they were married in 1958. Carl and Riky spent many years in Kitimat with Carl working as a foreman at Alcan Industries, still saving to buy a farm. With three kids in tow, Carl and Riky took that leap and bought a farm in Manitoba. Fifty years ago they began their farming life, growing crops and children and ending up with five girls and one boy. Carl was a natural dairyman, achieving numerous production awards. He was a hard-working, focused individual. In the early 1970s, Carl pursued another dream. He always wanted to fly, so in typical "can-do fashion", he bought a plane and put in an airstrip on the farm. He was mostly a local flyer but he did take the occasional cross-country flight. It was a good day for Carl when he could get his chores done in time to fly before sunset. Flying continued to be a passion for Carl, taking a hiatus of a few years and enjoying his last flight only weeks before his passing. In 1982, Carl sold his dairy, and settled in a much more relaxed routine. He kept the land and continued growing crops for 10 more years. Carl and Riky travelled the world together. In 1992, they began a new routine that would prove to be a cherished one. They started to go to Weslaco, Texas every winter. Carl and Riky enjoyed a whole new community there with many other snowbirds for the next 21 years. In 1994, their St. Pierre retirement meant building a house on the lot just west of their homestead. With a large lawn to cut and lots of wood in the back, Carl had enough things to keep him fulfilled, healthy and happy. Retirement also allowed Carl to pursue his other passion, card playing. Carl always enjoyed a good card game with cherished friends. Carl will be remembered for his spark for life, his ability to get his work done efficiently, and his honest nature. He was pragmatic and practical and was respectful in how he communicated. He could be trusted, and was a good person to talk to when an issue arose. He loved to find the humour in things. He was a very disciplined person who didn't complain. Finding solutions to problems came easily to him. He was a good conversationalist and friend, and an amazing spouse and father. Carl is survived by his wife Riky, his children, Diane (Tim) Yusishen, Lesly (Richard) Dawyduk, Charles Bastiaanssen, Elizabeth Simpson, Veronica (Kerry) Pawluski, and Tracey Bastiaanssen. He will also be missed by grandchildren Leeanne, Taylor, Keifer, Ricky, Carson, Alyssa, Annamieke, Ethan, Mathias and Avalene. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at St. Pierre Catholic Church, St. Pierre, Manitoba. A private interment will take place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, donations can be made to Palliative Care, in care of Southern Health/Santé Sud. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

We spent many hours sharing Carl's passion for flying and he literally took us under his wings. I had the joy of understanding his love of flying. Carl was a very social fellow and enjoyed company. He was thoughtful, astute in many ways and a really good friend to all. Please accept our condolences knowing that he will be dearly missed. - Posted by: Jim Dewart and Claudette Closson (Friend, flying companion, and Routier sharer) on: Dec 19, 2013

Dear Aunti Riki and family, Our sincere condolences. From Riny, Kim, Leone, Martine and myself. We'll remember Uncle Carl as a man who's focussed on his targets, wise, straight and with a warm heart. Together with Diane we traveled to the Rockies beginning of the eighties last Century. Flying along the Trans Canadian Highway, a block around the thunderstorms, restless when we wanted a sunbath on the shores of the Athabasca river and generous in every town (Banff, Jasper, Hinton etc). Even my last trip to St. Pierre. Within 30min after a 2000km drive, we were in his "loved playing tool" flying and checking the environment after a very wet spring. We wish you strength and luck, because he will continuously be flying above all of you. Leo & Riny - Posted by: Leo & Riny Slütter (family) on: Dec 10, 2013

Our condolences to your families for such a sad event. We enjoyed your visits to Edmonton and our visits to St Pierre. Carl was such a gentle man. We didn't know him well but from what we saw, he cared about his family and always had a kind word. He will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Ernie and Mary Ellen Pawluski (Veronica's in-laws) on: Dec 07, 2013

Dear Aunty Riky and Family, My sympathies and thoughts are with you all in this difficult time. May the memories of the smile and humor of Uncle Carl give you all the strength for the time ahead. I'll remember him as an open minded, friendly and very hospitality person you could have nice conversations with. I also remember the twinkle in his eyes, when he took me for a flight in his plane. Two years ago I met both Aunty Riky and Uncle Carl in Kelowna. Boy, he was still very young in his mind and enjoying life as much as he could. This is how I will remember him. - Posted by: Peter Bastiaanssen (Nephew) on: Dec 06, 2013

We would like to express our sincere sympathies to the Bastiaanssen family. We have very good memories of time spent in Riki and Carl's home during our high school years and later on in life. Carl's cheerful disposition, witty sense of humor and welcoming nature will always remain dear to us. We pray that your memories of Carl as loving husband, caring father and a good friend bring you comfort in the days to come. Our only regret is that it's been way too long since our last visit. Take care. Love Richard and Huguette - Posted by: Huguette and Richard Turenne (Friend of the family) on: Dec 04, 2013

To Carl’s family, please accept my condolences during this difficult time. When I think of Carl warm memories of late night “barouche marathons” and watching the Canadians win another game on CBC HNIC come to mind. He was a kind and patient man with a great sense of humour. At the time Carl never shovelled his walk in the winter but had me convinced in the logic of it all. The flight he took me on over Morris during the flood of 1979 is a memory that will stay with me forever. Thank you Carl for all you’ve given. Please accept our condolences Riky and family on your loss. Carl and Riky were wonderful neighbours for many years in Manitoba and here in Weslaco, Texas. We so expected to see Carl walking down our street in Weslaco this year. He will sadly be missed at card games and on the shuffleboard court. He had that "true" competitiveness that allowed him to play his best in winning but yet humble in losing. May his memories give you strength in the coming days, - Posted by: Bill and Yvonne Grabowsky (Former residents of St. Pierre, neighbours and Winter Texans in Weslaco) on: Dec 03, 2013

Carl was a great fellow, and a great parent who, with his wife, raised a fine bunch of kids. I had the pleasure of teaching several of them. I, along with my wife Aimée, extend our sincere sympathies to Riky and family for the loss of a husband, a father and grandfather. May he continue to "fly" above us. - Posted by: Edmond LaBossière (Fellow St-Pierre-Jolys community resident) on: Dec 03, 2013
