MAURICE (MOE) RYBUCK June 11, 1937 - December 4, 2013 On Wednesday, December 4, 2013 Maurice passed away, at St. Boniface Hospital, at 76 years of age. He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Lucille; daughter Denise and husband Mel; daughter Michele; his beloved granddaughter, "Peewee" Peyton, and brother Peter and family. Also left to mourn are his mother Mary and sister Eleanor. He grew up on the family farm in Senkiw, Manitoba. He enjoyed being active, especially playing baseball and later became an umpire to continue his love of the game. Maurice was involved with the St. Boniface Mohawks hockey team for many years. Curling was another passion, both as a participant and spectator, as he travelled to Briers and World games over the years. Soccer became a sport he adopted due to his daughters' participation, becoming both a coach and organizer of tournaments. Golf was another pastime he indulged in as time permitted. Many miles were spent traveling the back roads of Canada while camping and enjoying the biggest campfires he could make. He began his working career as a federal employee for the Unemployment Insurance Commission, but then followed his dream to become a travelling salesman as a tobacco representative for Rothmans, Benson & Hedges. And travel he did. There was not a small village or community in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or Northwestern Ontario that he could not readily identify with and place it for you on the map. He retired in 1996 after 31 years on the road logging over 2,325,000 km. "On the Road Again", by Willie Nelson was his anthem. He was a 48 year member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Branch 141 Legion and had been a member of both the Naval and Army Reserves. He was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 as a member of the Vita Cubs. The last few years of his life had not been kind to him as he became blind, a double amputee, and received three times weekly dialysis treatments, all due to Diabetes. Throughout all this, he managed to maintain a sense of humour, while embracing the challenges he was faced with courage and determination. This is something we all admired; as well as his tenacity. He loved his family, all dogs especially his furry friends, Buffy, Pesik and Brady, perogies, cigars, his pipe, good and bad jokes, Polka Party on the radio, Ukrainian and Scottish music, the Montreal Canadiens, and driving, especially "Rybuck Rambles". His family is grateful for the loving care and compassion provided by the Dialysis Team and 5E Medicine at St. Boniface Hospital, as well as the loving care given by the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, volunteers, and wonderful staff and Ladies' Auxiliary at Holy Family Nursing Home. We are also appreciative of those of you who visited and maintained telephone contact with him. It meant a great deal to him and to his immediate family. Cremation has taken place with a Memorial Service to be held at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. on Saturday, December 14 at 10:00 a.m. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Maurice Rybuck to the Winnipeg Humane Society. "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."

  • China and I looked very forward to our visits every Tuesday. Maurice's kindness, gentleness, and generosity will be greatly missed. China knows that every Tuesday Maurice could be relied upon for a snuggle, usually a treat, and often a ride in his wheelchair. She loved that, while sitting in his arms. China refuses to go home on Tuesdays until she gets a cuddle from Maurice. She hasn't even seemed bothered when on the occasional time he happened to be out of treats. As soon as I tell her we can go see Maurice she leads me to the elevator, then down the hall to his room. I will be sure to have treats for China at the end of our weekly visits to Holy Family, and will do so in Maurice's name. Rest well, sweet Maurice. - Posted by: Helen Coish and China (friend) on: Dec 06, 2013
